New Delhi, October 4: Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said the pay commission issues raised by the three armed forces was "not about money" but status and equality.

"The issue here is not about money. It has been overplayed by the media. It is about status and equivalence that existed (before the pay commission), and the command and control relationship (between the armed forces officers and their civilian counterparts)," Mehta, who is also the chairman of the chiefs of staff committee, said after Territorial Army Day parade in New Delhi.

"How it (status, equality, command and control structure) has been disturbed (by the pay commission report), nobody knows," he said when asked about the issues raised during the meeting of the services chiefs with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday.

Mukherjee heads a three-member ministerial committee set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to look into the grievances of the Army, Navy and Air Force over "anomalies" in the 6th Central Pay Commission (CPC).

"It was a fact-finding mission. We had a long discussion with the minister over the issues," he said.

Welcoming the Cabinet approval to Phase-II of the Ajai Vikram Singh Committee report for creation of 1,896 new posts from Colonels to Lieutenant Generals and their equivalents in the three forces, Mehta said: "We are happy with the implementation. This was an ongoing thing."

Honour Them : They deserve it most by Dr SS Ghosh on 04 Oct 2008

I think the naval chief is correct. Politicians and babus are trying to humiliate defence services and in the process compromising the soverenity of the country. i don't think a demoralised force can fight China or Pak or terrorism.

Poor Sergeants! by prabhu on 04 Oct 2008

The most unfortunate part of the whole matter is that those who have really been downgraded are forgotten,. Poor sergeants of IAF have been pushed down one grade and pay band ,below their civilian counterparts. The X group sergeants were in pre revised scale of 5000-6500 and they are now placed in PB-1 starting at 5200 with a grade pay of 2800 while their civilian counter parts in the same scale are placed in PB-2starting at 9300 with a grade pay of 4200. No noise about this by the chiefs while they make so much of unnecessary noise on the issue of Lt. cols who are not down graded at all. The chiefs who made a fuss of whole thing should be made accountable. They made everyone to suffer on a NO MATTER at all. Please fix the responsibilty. Even the print and visual media feel that it's officers who make the forces and ignore millions of soldiers who are the real backbone of defense services but whose genuine voices are choked by the so called officers.Jai Jawan

Status and equality of 3 Services. by madan gopal sharma on 04 Oct 2008

Sir, I appreciate the opinion of Navy Chief Mr. Mehta about status and equility. Govt. should consider his request without any ifs and buts.

Status of Armed Forces Personnel by SURESH KHANNA on 04 Oct 2008

The beaurocrates are very clever people. They have wrested all the powers and systemetically down graded the status of Armed forces personnel. How giving additional vaccancies helps? It only down grades Rank. Work which was done earlier by Brigadier would now be done by Lt.Gen. Why Defence Secretary is an IAS person. What does he know of Defence. Why is Defence Ministry manned by IAS. Why don't you put Defence people, thereby creating genuine vacancies. Why you do not allow Armed Forces Officers to take voluntairy retirement? The Government must redress the grievances of the people who are working in extremely harsh conditions.
