I believe that the fault lies not only with the students but also with the entire education system, which stresses on cramming than learning.
As the syllabus is too vast and there are other extra subjects like computers to study, students are not able to find enough time to devote to sports. After spending eight hours in school, they rush to coaching classes or spend the evening completing their homework.
This is not to say that students should distract themselves from academics, but they should try to create a balance between both academics and sports. Teachers as well as parents should encourage their children to go out and play. Teachers can help students by giving them less homework so that the student has the time and energy to play in the evening. Parents can make a time-table for their children where sufficient time is allocated for both academics and playing.
We need to realise that it is essential to have a well-rounded personality than being just a bookworm. Just like academics help in developing the mind, sports help to develop the body. Some parents and teachers, who argue that playing is wastage of time, say that this time can be utilised in further enhancing knowledge. People bearing such thoughts need to know that sports are significant not only for a healthy body but also a healthy mind.
A good sportsman is able to perform better than others because his energy is channelised properly.
Students at their age are a mine house of energy, which needs to be utilised properly. Sports is the best way to energise the mind and the body.
