Sydney, January 4: International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive Malcolm Speed has suggested that the umpiring issue could be stopped from blowing over if batsmen choose to walk once they get out.

"It would be great if they were to walk and there was universal acceptance on calling their own decisions. But it does not seem to be going that way," said Speed.

The visiting Indian cricket team has been so upset by umpiring standards exhibited by Steve Bucknor that they at one stage decided to make an official complaint to the match referee.

Umpires are currently allowed to refer only run-outs, stumping decisions, bump-ball catches and catches they could not see properly to the third umpire.

There is now a clamour to allow all decisions -- particularly lbw shouts and delicate edges behind -- to be reviewed by television replays.

Speed claimed that a new system could soon be in place which would allow teams three chances to appeal to the third umpire. It will be experimented upon at the Champions Trophy ODI tournament in Pakistan later this year.

Speed had also tried to implement this system during the 2006 Champions Trophy in India but the majority support from the ICC's units was not forthcoming.

Greater, Greatest by Cogito_ergo... on 05 Jan 2008

It'll be greater if umpires like Bucknor, Arvind de Silva, Benson, et al, were shot dead. It'l be greatest if they had never been born.

I feel that controversial LBW / Catches should also be referred to third umpire

Poor Umpiring by Steve Bucknor and Benson by Venkat on 05 Jan 2008

If players walk off by themselves, why we need umpires like blind and deaf Steve Bucknor who are paid equivalent to players these days? I am a Qualified umpire and I do not mind the job, if players are going to walk away. What a stupid statement by Malcom Speed! Fire the incompetent ones and appoint better ones, Mr. Speed; that is the way to go!

Sportsman Spirit lacking in today's Cricketers. by Ravindra on 04 Jan 2008

I remember,in 80s,Sunil Gavaskar used to walk back without even looking at the umpire when he was sure he was out.If I remember right once when he was the captain of India, G R Vishwanath had asked the opposition batsman to come back and bat when he was walking to the pavilion as he knew that the Umpire's decision was wrong That kind of sportsman spirit seems to be lacking in cricketers these days.

Sportsman spirit in favor of Cricket by Maulik on 05 Jan 2008

You are right, but there should be a way to compensate wrong decision by umps going against the batsman, in other words if batsman can challenge the ump for any decision going against him can help batsman walk away when he is sure he is out.
