Los Angeles A R Rahman today scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win two Oscars for the Best Original Score ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and its foot-tapping song ‘Jai Ho’.

"Before coming here I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt that way was when I was getting married," he told in his acceptance speech after bagging the Original Score Academy.

"There is a Hindi dialogue 'mere pass ma hai' which means even if I have got nothing I have my mother here. I want to thank her for coming all the way to support me," the 43-year-old musician said.

Rahman was again on the dais to accept the Oscar for the best Original Song for the number "Jai ho", sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Mahalaxmi Iyer.

Before that he performed a medley of 'Jai ho' and 'O saya' assisted by dancers and singer John Legend.

"The essence of the film is about optimism and home.

The power of hope in our lives. All my life I had the choice between hate and love. I choose love and here I am," said the musician while accepting the award for best song, penned by Gulzar.

"There is something I say (in Tamil) whenever I win an award: 'Ella pugazlum iravanuku' (which means 'all the fame and the glory I dedicate to god'," he said.

Rahman had earlier pocketed a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his music in the Danny Boyle film, which won eight Oscars.

He became the fourth Indian to win the coveted trophy joining the ranks of Bhanu Athaiya and Satyajit Ray and Resul Pookutty, who won the Oscar today for sound mixing in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

VETRI NADAI PODU - VAZGA VALAMUDAN-JAI HO by sujay ganesan on 23 Feb 2009

congrats Mr Pookutty and Mr A R Rahman for the Oscars. Mr Rahman - I have loved your Scintillating And Vibrant music in all your films. You even deserved an oscar for the heart melting musical scores in Maniratnam's ROJA but unfortunately it was not directed by a white man to be recognised by the western society.Having read about your life history in a Tamil Magazine where you had mentioned about extreme difficulties, obstacles, jealousy, black magic etc that your dad (musician himself) and your family faced and the reasons for Deleep Kumar to become A R Rahman, I thank God for you to choose peace rather than hatred which you aptly mentioned in your speech at the oscars "All my life I had the choice between hate and love. I choose love and here I am," . Your humbleness and simplicity is something everyone should learn from you and you rightly mentioned, 'Ella pugazlum iravanuku' ('all the fame and the glory I dedicate to god)' We pray for you to win more laurels for India.

Selfish and mean by Gaganjit Singh on 23 Feb 2009

While it was a great achievement to have won two oscars, Rahman came across as selfish and mean during his acceptance speech for 'best orignal song' in not acknowledging the contributions of Gulzar, the absent joint winner; and Sukhwinder

It's 'Jai ho' for Rahman, wins two Oscars by PKumar on 23 Feb 2009

I am with Rahman in his Personal Achievement for getting Oscars. It might be his dream come true. But at the same I lament whether Oscar has honoured Indian Music(?) or has marketed itself in India. These crazy people who are dancing and enjoying (specially the MEDIA) are forgetting that India as well as Rahman has produced many other memorable compositions which deserved several Oscars. Stalwarts like SD,CR.OPN, SJ, Naushad, Shailendra, Gulzar himself, Sahir, Mazrooh, AB, Shakeel, Raja Mehendi Ali Khan, Rajendra Krishna have given gems and diamonds. Even RD gave world-class music in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. 'Jai Ho...Media'NB: I am not against Rahman, but Rahman honestly would have got surprised.Regards

OSCAR IS good but... by Arvind on 23 Feb 2009

Winning oscar is good and congratulation. But it always seems that such awards are biased. There was nothing great about the movie as such, and we people in India always appreciate things, once it is appreciated by western. There were many good movies made that were better contended, and in my opinion Lagaan was far better movie, but we knew it won't have got the award. So, I think getting award is good for indiviual, but if it make me proud as Indian, I have reservation

Oscar shame by Mahesh.G on 23 Feb 2009

Oscar has lost its respect by giving an award to a movie which does not deserve it. The oscar award for the song "Jai Ho" is not of Oscar calibre too. They know how to push their own market by giving awards to Indian people.Like Miss India or Miss World

I Agree with you by Anurag Kumar on 24 Feb 2009

It is quite a comfort to know that there are people around you still. Of course you are right there.

Oscar Shame by Ananth Seth on 23 Feb 2009

Agree with u Mahesh. Ignore those who do not see or do not want to see the conspiracy behind this great political chicanery.

oscar by sameem on 23 Feb 2009

dear sir,can u explain what is oscar respect? if u can make india and indian a name by craeting a record or any useful mankind things pls try and show apart from this dont blame any body or any things. be proud as a indian awarded oscar award. you try to be a indian and think positive you may win. wish rahman for the great achievement.

1 oscar by pchetri on 23 Feb 2009

Dear Sameem, It is just publcity, media hype and lobbying which are themain features. Music of Lagaan could have achieved Oscar for Rahman. But we people donot see reason. Oscar this time has honoured itself by honouring an Indian. It wants its market in full force here. People are dying for Oscar, but can they say that any Indian Music Directors till not has not produced Oscar worthy music except Rahman. Remember they were not associated with any foreign name. Had any film with total cast and crew being Indian got Oscars, only then it would have been worthy.

oscars by hersh on 23 Feb 2009

you are the best and you know how to do it
