Jamia Vice-Chancellor Prof Mushrul Hasan met Singh to apprise him of the decision of the university to provide legal aid to the two students, a move criticised by the BJP.
"There is nothing wrong in providing legal aid. In this case, I have got full details. Whatever Mushirul Hasan told me, I understand in this context, the decision of the university is in the interest of the nation," Singh said.
BJP has demanded dismissal of the Vice-Chancellor and termed the decision as ‘atrocious, anti-national and highly objectionable’.
After meeting the minister, Hasan said BJP's allegation that the university was diverting the government funds for providing legal aid was ‘baseless’.
"Providing legal aid is the decision of the Academic Council. Legal aid is the constitutional right of every person. We stand by our decision. There is no question of my resignation," he said.
Noting that the classes have been running smoothly and the recent incidents have not affected the confidence of students, he said, "the confidence of students has gone up after my interaction and peace march in the campus".
Appealing to political parties not to politicise the issue, Hasan said, "if it is politicised, the repercussion will not be good".
Asked whether he was facing any threat, Hasan said it should not affect the ‘principle’.

Oh buddou, when will you die? when this raavna be killed???
Isnt it contradictory you first suspend the students and then provide them with legal aid and am sure the money which is being spent on legal aid can be better used for more deserving causes. I agree with the fact that its legal as well constitutional right of every indian but need the state pay for their follies? They are well educated people who knew what they were doing hence were well aware of the consequences so why this sudden compassion. Jamia milia is setting a bad precedent. This is taking communalisation of education to another level.
Here it is the place of Birth of Islamic Terrorism. Inspite of knowing thet SIMI is behind the Blasts and suspects are to be iterogated, an university to come forward for rescuing students just because it is named as muslim university, is not right. No university should be allowed to get in way of investigation and culprits. By bringing university in...the VC is trying to polarise the students to get united to fight against the country's action. He must be sacked
So we now have it from the final authorities. In India the majority community doesn't count at all, while terrorists and aggressive minorities do........take care Mr Arjun Singh......there will be repurcussions.......your party will pay for it in the next elections! And this time there could be a violent demand for amending the 'first past the post' system of declaring the winner in the elections.Looks like the Constitution as it stands needs to be amended.
Wow! Here comes the man...after a longtime from hiding
It happens only in India!
We can expect this from anyone from this government. Providing legal help based on religion is the thing which can only be found in India with help of these out of mind people. They think whatever suits them as per Vote Bank politics is correct and is in national intrest. If this help ( Based on Religion) is in national intrest then only God can save our country. Thanks Mr Singh for such a wonderful and thought ful comment.
Arjun Singh Ji !!! Why dont you make the bomb blast suspects your "Damaad"
