“Why they had to announce the decision today? March 14 is a very sad day for all of us. The Congress may have the compulsion to support the CPM-backed candidate. But it would have been better if they had avoided this day. But how will they understand the feelings of the people of Singur and Nandigram?” Banerjee said at a rally organised by Progressive Secular Democratic Front to observe ‘Nandigram Day’.
The Congress’ support to Malihabadi has dashed the hope of Trinamool-backed Dinesh Trivedi’s re-election to the Upper House. Banerjee said her “politics is not confined to one seat only.” The people will give a befitting reply to the Congress, she added.
Justifying her party’s alliance with SUCI, Banerjee said that a new political equation is taking shape in the state. “The members of SUCI are Leftists, but they do not belong to the Left Front,” she added.
The procession began from Hazra and ended with tributes being offered at the Gandhi statue at Mayo Road. Artistes like Kaushik Sen and Saonli Mitra also joined the procession. Coming down heavily against the CPM, Banerjee said that a year has but the missing people of Nandigram have yet to be traced. Despite repeated demands, no land map has been prepared till now in West Bengal, she added.
