RAPE IN INDIA by JAYANT SHEKHAR on 31 Mar 2009

RAPE IS HEINOUS PRACTICE.CULPRITS OF RAPE SHOULD BE HANGED.INDIA IS BECOMING SAFE FOR RAPING WHITE WOMANS.I ENCOURAGE ALL INDIANS TO COME FORWAD TO MAKE INDIA A SAFE,STRONG, PROSPEROUS,DEVELOPED NATION.

Rape convictions by Niranjan on 13 Dec 2008

But we have the lowest conviction rate because most of the rapes are committed by the sons of the bigwigs, who can get off easily by intimidating and threatening the victims. The history will bear this out.

Browns don't count... by cd on 10 Dec 2008

And the picture is not of a typical desi girl - but drug addict teenager who came to india for sex and drug...nice role model of innocent victim. But, already know, we brown Indians don't count for the media.....

3? 1 on actual data by Aditya Singh on 10 Dec 2008

India is 3rd because, unlike US and other developed countries where every case is counted, In India against those who report, many times go unreported and many more are turned away from Police station, otherwise it would have been undisputed number one, and guys who talk about percentage if the actual percentage is counted we will still be among the worst!! dont get charged up by this, work for its betterment, have you forgotten the image of molestation outside Marriot Juhu, 100 of people trying to molest a girl? Indian men are among the most pervert as can be vouched in 1000's of town where girls cannot still move very freely, why talk about towns lets talk about Delhi where our north eastern brethrens are always treated as "available" just because in North east the girls are more equal and always have dressed in more western ways, I am shameful about that. Wake up, dont defend yourself, do something to prove it wrong in the next few years

Re look by Indian on 10 Dec 2008

Guys .. the ranking is based on the number of cases but can please anyone justify how can this be treated authentic anyway? If you want to a ranking it should be on percentage basis, India being a huge country with crores of people it is but natural that the numbers in every category would be high. I agree with others that it is a henious crime but we are not doing any justice by calling us No 3. It is only glamourising problems and showing ourselves in bad light to the world community

Incomplete picture by Indian on 10 Dec 2008

It would have helped to complete the article by reporting the countries where crimes rate is very low and also about the law that helps it keep low.

IT is official by jolly Chacko on 10 Dec 2008

I am just responding to the statement of your News paper that its official that India is the third worst oftender of Rape. How could you say that when other countries of Rape cases does not have even a small fraction of the population that India has ? The result should not be based on the number but the number of cases reported accordingly to the total number of the people of that particular country

Rape by Zak on 09 Dec 2008

This figure must be representing only tip of the ice berg as many victims does not report these henoius incidents.India should follow everything western countries do and beat them to be number one by ignoring our tradition and culture. All recent crime rate figures announced are very encourgaing for we Indians. Murder, rape, suicide etc....Female infanticide tops the list by 10 million in 10 years more than ww2 figure so Hitler is nothing in fornt of us .If we ban SATI then kill all females before they are born. When are going to change ...feell asahmed !! Hope all these things will change for good.

Its official: India 3rd worst offender in rape cases by Vijay on 09 Dec 2008

Most likely this is not true- MOST of rape cases are registered by the officials -just in order to increase their filed case tally- consensual relation is turned in rape by these officials -by threatening the girl with action under SITA - thus getting these officials great headlines. Also it has been noticed that Rape section 376 is misused by girls mostly to black mail heir suitors into marriage. Also there are reports of money being extorted by registering cases under rape law totally favoring the girls.

Statistics Is Not True. Media Should Desist From Sensationalising Rape. by Rohan on 09 Dec 2008

Rape is definately a heinous crime but that doesn't mean that the media should bloat it up and make more TRPs. Remember, mere allegations of rape cannot be assumed to be true. The home ministry has taken the number of allegations of rape and other sexual crimes as they were registered in police stations and NOT the convictions. In A case of rape, the burden of proof lies with the man and NOT the woman. It is very difficult to prove innocence. Also, the woman can get away with false allegations. Cases of rape are lodged by women for various reasons - genuine, extortion, for not marrying, for not obeying her diktats etc. Also, women committing sexual crimes on men and small boys is NOT even recognised by the law! Its high time the media shows the TRUE statistics and NOT hype it by showing the number of allegations alone. What about false cases? What happens to these cases when it enters the courts of law?

Shocking! by arbitary on 09 Dec 2008

I am shocked and disgusted by the response of others on this message board. How quickly they jump to conclusions that the women must be lying/coercing/misusing the law. Even if India is 10th on the list of countries, does that make it any better? Shouldn't we try to eliminate crimes against women altogether. Indian men have one of the worst attitudes in the world. On one hand, they glorify women by placing them on pedestals and tomtoming Indian culture to them and on the other hand we are a country with one of the worst records in women's safety. Shame on all of you!

Shameful by Prassoon on 10 Dec 2008

I agree with Rohan, "arbitary" should educate herself about ground realities. Is rape that easy?
