It's still possible to take back Kilinochchi from army: LTTE

Colombo Tamil Tigers, now virtually on the run, have claimed that they still retained the capability to seize back LTTE's de-facto capital of Killinochchi and said Sri Lankan Government's plans to hold elections in the Northern areas "would be a futile exercise".

Emerging after the devastating defeat at the hands of Lankan Army, LTTE political chief B Nadesan said that "Kilinochchi town was captured more than once by the Sri Lanka military earlier."

"Similarly, we have also re-captured the town on earlier occasions, effectively bringing the town under our control to serve the administrative and infrastructure needs," Nadesan said.

"It is in Kilinochchi, where the Sri Lankan forces have suffered historic debacles," he told the pro-LTTE website Tamilnet.

On the issue of government plans to hold provincial elections in the North after liberating it from the LTTE, he said it would be a futile exercise.

"It will be a futile exercise to attempt to sideline the authentic representatives of the people of a nation and to depict the puppets and paramilitary agents of an invading military as the representatives of the people," the LTTE political head said.

"Tamil people have clearly defined their political aspirations by the democratic mandate in the elections of 1977," he said adding, "our cadres had been spearheading the struggle since then, fulfilling the mandate of our people and we are the representatives of the people of the Tamil homeland."

"Our people, as well as the entire global Tamil community are with us. This is our message to those who are embarked on futile exercises to install political puppets," Nadesan said.

"We have faced several major political and military challenges and have successfully withstood those with the support of our people and we are determined to overcome the current challenges," he added.

Nadesan also said that the LTTE was educating and training the people in its areas to take safety measures to shield from sustaining injuries from attacks by the Sri Lankan security forces.

On criticism by two human rights organisations, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, that LTTE was blocking civilians from moving into government areas, Nadesan told the website that it was not true.

"Our opinion is that these organisations should not base their reports on the one-sided information being supplied by the Sri Lankan Government and its proxies. I urge them to visit our territory and independently listen to the views of our people," he added.

"Lankan military has been waging its war for more than three decades. We are surprised that the international community maintained silence instead of reacting in strongest possible terms against the Lankan state's war crimes and the crimes against humanity," the LTTE leader said.

In reply to another query on providing updates of the LTTE cadres killed, Nadesan said families of "our fallen fighters are always informed within a few hours by the respective Command."

He said the LTTE secretariat periodically issues the details of its fighters killed in the clashes. "Our commanders would be naturally concerned of releasing certain details that could be used by the enemy, to make dynamic assessments of our military tactics," he added.

Eliminate LTTE but rehabilitate Tamils by G on 14 Jan 2009

I'm an Indian Tamil. I sympathize with the Tamil people of Sri Lanka who have been suffering for many decades now. I have absolutely no sympathy for LTTE. I consider them to be a criminal terrorist organization. They wiped out all the other Tamil organizations - rebels and moderates alike. They have committed the gravest sin of killing Rajiv Gandhi who made best efforts in the interest of the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Tamil people's suffering will not cease until LTTE is active. LTTE is the biggest hinderance to the peace. And last but not the least, the sinhalese politicians should realize that there has to be a genuine respectable coexistence of Sinhalese and the Tamils. One cannot eliminate the other. Sri Lankan government should make efforts for the genuine respectable peace of all the people of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Tamils need a healing touch. No to Eelam and Yes to a peaceful Sri Lanka.
