Sydney, January 8: BCCI's threat to pull out of the ongoing tour is a "veiled form of blackmail" and the ICC should not succumb to the Indian Board and let it usurp the governing body's role, the Australian media said on Tuesday.

Cricket writers here felt the Indian team's grievances against controversial umpire Steve Bucknor may be "genuine" but their threat to pull out should be given the "harsh response it deserves."

"India's threat to boycott the Australian tour has come down to a battle of who runs cricket - India or the ICC," Robert Craddock wrote in The Daily Telegraph.

"If the ICC buckles and overturns the Harbhajan verdict because of Indian pressure, it may as well shut its doors in Dubai and cease to exist," he said.

"If the ICC feels Harbhajan was worth suspending, it must not crumble in the face of a subcontinental blackmail from the world's most powerful cricket nation," it said.

He, however, sympathised with the Indian "genuine" grievances against umpire Steve Bucknor, who has been replaced by New Zealand's Billy Bowden for the third Test in Perth.

"India want Steve Bucknor sacked from the next Test in Perth and so he should be. Every grievance India have against him is genuine."

"But India's suspension of the tour while they wait for an appeal on the suspension of Harbhajan Singh is a veiled form of blackmail and must be treated with the harsh response it deserves," he said.

"If the Harbhajan verdict stands - as it should – and India abandon the tour, then so be it. Their nation will be in disgrace, their team retreating as men who cowered in the face of substantial adversity," he said in a harsh comment.

sydney cricket row by maneesh khanna on 09 Jan 2008

this guys statements the typical hypocritic attitude of australians. If u ask any cricketing team in the world, aussies carry the worst behaevior and talk about integrity typically seen with pak, srilanka etc.Has it ever happened in INdia that a team has to talk of ending the tour? But it has happened in aus.with pak and Sl.This by itself says it all,who is the common factor and who should be learning manners from indians and pakistani teams.

Hue and cry by liers by Vikas Ingle on 08 Jan 2008

Harbhajan has been accused of "racist" behavior by Australian team members whose truthfulness itself is under serious question. There is neither any proof of same nor any history of any Indian (not only cricketers) involved in racist behavior. If Indian cricketers and public is racist against "only Australian cricketers" in whole world then it shows untruthfulness of this bunch of fifteen people. The author also seems suffering from narrow vision. The charges laid by Symonds are clearly false and sheer tactics for demoralizing Harbhajan and Indian team and nothing to do with racism or anything of such sort. Equally irresponsible behavior has been displayed by the Match-refree also.

Fair. Is it? by Umesh Pai on 08 Jan 2008

The real reason why the Aussies want the umpires' direct verdict (rather than the referral system using third umpire using the aid of Technology) is that they like the human element. Why? Because they are the best side in the world at capitalizing on the let-offs provided by the umpires. How? well, they do not seem to have the sense of guilt. Now wonder how they get fantastic averages, wins, records, ego and so on?This is not to deny their obvious talents (skills, team spirit, commitment, strength, stamina etc). The trouble is they also carry a lot of other skills unrelated to cricket. One is Sledging (also known as Mental Disintegration, made famous by Steve Waugh). This should have been banned a long time ago. If the Aussies are so keen on using this talent, the ICC can organize a separate tournament and no doubt, they would add another trophy in their collection. The other talent is Acting: When they snick one to the keeper (and even to slips) and the opposition team appeals to umpires, they stick to their crease like leeches, pretending nothing has happened and fooling the umpires. This kind of performances deserve Oscars and Hollywood would be a better place for them.

Poor OZ Press by Jayakar Dalavai on 08 Jan 2008

What hypocrisy! The same Aussies would do any thing to win and take credit for the win. Ponting knew very well that Ganguly's snick hit the grass and he deliberately lied to get Ganguly out of the way. And look at Dravid's dismissal; how can you even justify an appeal? They appealed and he was out. Even Ponting deliberately tried to influence the umpire by standing there. Was it not worthy of a penalty?Who is daunting the umpires and swaying the match referee and still complaining of veiled blackmail? Australian press should reprehensibly look into their own teams virtues before pointing fingers at India. They are known worldwide for their frolics on the field. What was said and not said by Bhajji no one heard. Can any man with dignity take it lying down? Yes… India is a powerful cricket nation; people love Indian cricket team and would not hesitate to chip in 2.3 million to pull out of the tour if that undermines nation’s honor.Wake up Australian press… don’t act like your players on the field.

Poor Oz press by Manohar V. Rakhe. on 08 Jan 2008

Well said, Mr. Dalavai. I agree with you 100 per cent.

Mr. Robert Craddock by Anupam Kumar on 08 Jan 2008

Dear Mr. Robert Craddock,Don't you know who runs the cricket. Gentleman game are run by gentleman and India by status is gentle Mr. Ponting can't think of.Mr. Gili has made the reputation of gentleman in 10 years of his career and undid with one statement, so difficult is this! So Mr. Robert Craddock how do you had felt if the coins would have overturned? Must be justifying all these as Mr. Ponting and comany is doing now!Why are you questioning Mr. Robert Craddock? It is time to find the answer within yourself. Hope God can help you!Blessings!Anupamr

Racial Slur by Umesh Pai on 08 Jan 2008

Is it a blackmail threat by BCCI because it has so much power and financial muscle? What if Bangladesh or Srilanka, for instance, were to boycott the Series for the same reason. Of course then it may be OK because it will then be only for the sake of honour.

DAMN by SAM on 08 Jan 2008

ICC IS FINISHED ... IT WIL BE ICC(WORLD)INDIAN CRICKET COUNCIL OF THE WORLD

Racist by Sam on 08 Jan 2008

Here, one more cry baby, a la Ponting. They would have suffered an innings defeat. Look who is talking about being cowards. It is Australians... who cannot play honestly.... at all. the limit has been crossed this time. How can umpires make mistakes against only the opposition and not Australians... are they paid by ICC or Cricket Australia??? This is end of Cricket! let Australia be the No. 1 team without playing. All Indian star cricketers should boycott the tour till this match is officially declared ABONDONED!! Ponting is a barbarian in disguise... the World's biggest CRY BABY .. leading a bunch of cons.

Australian cricket stands exposed ! by Shaelesh on 08 Jan 2008

Well said Mr. Prabhakar ! Australians are not only thieves , they are superlative dishonest thieves ! Had there been even an iota of honesty left in these drooling dogs, they would have volunteered to either forefeit the game or represented to ICC to annul the game as the umpires on whose shoulders they rode to score an undeserved victory over deserving India have themselves been sacked from the series. Do these Australians need any more vindication of their crass capitulation to the lust for victory at any and every cost.

Banish Australia by SK Prabhakar on 08 Jan 2008

Whole of the Australia is reeking with racism Mr.Robert Craddock !Look at the way that poor doctor from Bangalore was dubbed as a terrorist. Reporters, writers like Robert Craddock, investigators, police, cricketers etc all are racist. Ricky ponting is a slur on international cricket as he is leading a band of thieves who even when caught red handed show no remorse for the pettiness they stoop to. Australia should be banished from the map of Cricket

Sledging hurts init!? by A. Mathew on 08 Jan 2008

Mr. Craddock, go take a walk. If Harbajan was banned solely based on the words of not-so-gentlemanly Ponting and a few cohorts, then India have by all means, a right to flex its muscles and proceed as necessary, to undo this injustice. The whole world knows who the real villains in the cricketing world.

It is Australian team and Australia that is coward and in disgrace by Alok on 08 Jan 2008

Robert Craddock , people don't throw stones at every street dog that barks at them. They just avoid the dog. So is the case with the Australian team. They are a hopeless case. If they don't know how to play honestly and always try to win the game by hook or by crook then, it is bettter to avoid playing with them instead of indulging in a fight with them every now and then. It is called prudence, not cowardness. And it is Australia is that is in disgrace, not India. You should first learn how to play honestly before you attempt to understand what kind of a behavior is a disgrace.

BCCI should dictate ICC by Sankar on 08 Jan 2008

90% of cricket market is BCCI given. If ICC does not listen to BCCI from whom its going to take orders ? Those who pay are the masters. Not those who say !

Uncivilised aussies by Indi on 08 Jan 2008

Indian team is not retreating as mentioned in the oz media. India love to play with eqauls, but not with cheats, abusive, racists australians. Cricket is a gentlemen game, but aussies are making it look like a criminal game because of there beasts like behaviour on the field and off it as well. Aussies are to cricket, like crimianls are to society. Aussies are a bad worm in work cricket. The sooner icc gets rid of these worms, its better for world cricket. BCCI should suspend its relations with CA. Ausssies should be banned from playing cricket for there racism, boorish, criminal behaviour on the field, as SA was banned for aparthied. Aussies know they are beatable, so they are resorting to all criminal ways of winning.
