On Board Prime Minister's Special Aircraft Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said BJP leader L K Advani had called him up to express "regret" over his utterances during the elections and that he reciprocated the gesture by apologising.

Seeking to put the recriminations behind, Singh also wished BJP well.

"I was compelled to reply him (Advani). I did say something which Mr Advani said hurt him.

"When he (Advani) rang up on May 16 to congratulate on the election results, he expressed regret. I also conveyed my apologies if I had hurt him," the Prime Minister told journalists when asked whether the bitterness of poll campaign had been forgotten and whether he had forgiven the BJP leader.

Singh said he was now looking forward to "close" relations with Advani as the Leader of Opposition.

To a question about problems in BJP after its poll debacle, Singh refused to comment, saying he was "not in favour of gloating over difficulties of other political parties. I wish them well".

Singh was talking to journalists while returning from Yekaterinburg after a three-day visit during which he attended the Summits of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and Brazil-Russia-India-China (BRIC).

Go to Pakistan Advani by Rohit on 19 Jun 2009

Advani should also apologize to nation for misguiding facts about Manmohan and should go back to Pakistan. He will find a suitable job of Chadar Chadho and Chadar Utaro on Kabbar of Jhinnah Mullah and company five times a day.

Thank Advani by Ram on 18 Jun 2009

Dr.MMS should have thanked Mr.Advani as the campaign by BJP made MMS realise that he is holding the important position of the country and he has to make the final decisions. The people voted Congress for Dr.MMS and they expect him to do the command rather than somebody else pulling the strings. Finally, the Prime Minister position will look as Prime position due to the campaign of BJP. ANother main issue of the BJP to bring back the illegal funds stashed abroad need to be taken up by Dr.MMS by appointing a task force (Like the BJP) in the interest of the nation.

Title of the news appears incorrect by V.S.Malhotra on 18 Jun 2009

Let us pray that this maturity will continue to prevail in the utterings of our political leaders. This said, The news compilers may like to see if they commited a mistake in framing the title of the news which in its present form seems not to be wholly true to the contents of the story. "PM accepts LKA's Appology, Offers his own", may be a bit better better.

BJP n CONG should work together by Dhawal on 18 Jun 2009

Mr. Rajesh Vyas, I think you went too fast reading the article. It mentioned very clearly Mr. Advani called Mr. Singh On MAY 16TH and congrulated and apologised same time for his election modus. On which Mr. SINGH is said to be compelled to apologize back to Mr. Advani. Yes Mr. Advani shouldn't have done that. And that is one of the mistakes BJP did not win as much. But unlike the versions of heavy loss no BJP has not lost number of votes comparitively. But thats a different matter. Its good to see maturity in Indian politicians at least the higher ranks. BJP n Cong should work together and in next election shun away these regional PAPPUS who have nothing to loose even if nation goes to dirt.

Despite the fact it was clear that personal abuse fest was done by Manmohan Singh.> Advani always talked about his lack of dicatets on his onw party .. he neve said anythign personal..but look at the media they are framign it as if Manmohan apologized which he shoudl have btw

Now Advani Shall apologize to Muslims for his role in Babri Masjid demolition:::::::::VARUN should apologize for his hate speach:::::::::::MODI shall appologize for his invovement in Post Godhra riots::::::::::Thackery for his role in Mombai Riots by True Indian on 17 Jun 2009

This Chaddiwala(LKA) appears to be afraid of cases against him in Babri Masjid demolition, that's why he surrendered to MMS.tHIS WILD CHAMELEON WILL CHANGE COLOR THE MOMENT IT GOES TO RSS JUNGLE, AS HE DID ON JINNAH REMARKS.I DO NOT TRUST THIS LIAR. WHEREAS MMS IS A HIGH CALIBRE CIVILZED AND WELL BEHAVED LEADER.IF ADVANI IS HURT WITH A SMALL REMARK OF MMS THAT TO IN REPLY, THEN HOW MUCH HE HURT THE SENTIMENTS OF MUSLIMS OF INDIA?HIS PARTY AND HIS MENTORS IN RSS ARE NOT EXCUSABLE.LK ADVANI IS PART OF GREATEST CONSPIRACY OF DEMOLITIONS, AND ORGANISED ATTACKS ON MUSLIMS/CHRISTIANS, MALEGAON BLASTS ETC. HE SHALL NEVER BE LET-OFF JUST BECOZ HE IS OPPOSITION LEADER.NOW I ASK MMS TO BE LIKE A IRONMAN AND DON'T MELTDOWN TO THIS ACCUSED,AS SUCH ADVANI WAS INVOLVED IN CRIMINAL CASES IN PAKISTAN BEFORE HE MIGRATED."""LKA BELONGS TO A CULT WHO MILK THE SNAKES AND CUT THE THROATS OF HUMAN BEINGS""".

Regret for not ACCEPTING a DEBATE...essentisl for a DEMOCRACY... by Snehasheela on 17 Jun 2009

Even in IRAN, candidates debate....No harm if you think you have said some thing truth...why regret??behave like a leader in a democratic society...why regret??

Singh is the King by SVS Subrahmaniam on 17 Jun 2009

It is the greatness, maturity and statesmanlyness of Mr. Manmohan Singh to express regret to Advaani ji which is unsolicited. With out even acknowledging the health of the person on whom the BJP and Advaani ji had attacked is unpardonable. They might have said that they did not mean it was not personally against him directly after having talked all nonsense. For that in his feeble health condition after the by pass surgery, Singh had to reply but replied with utmost dignity. As he has said he will give the due regard and position to the leader of opposition, here after it is the duty of the opposition leaders to reciprocate the same.

Singh is the King by N.V.SANKARAN on 18 Jun 2009

According to the report, it was Mr. Advani who first expressed his regrets over the pre-poll utterances he made against MMS and MMS only reacted as any decent man would do. So the actions of both of them have been dignified. As for the poll remarks, while Mr. Advani made only a purely political remark about MMS( that he was the weakest PM), the PM replied saying that Advani's only achievement was the demolition of the Babri Masjid, which incidentally is a highly inflammable issue and had the effect of causing further polarization of the voters on communal basis.

not good for India if we have not good opposition to keep check on the UPA Govt. by real bharatiya on 17 Jun 2009

bjp supporters are blaming on media that media is always pro-congress.But they should accept the bitter fact that ppl always like to stay with good ppl. cong is good therefore, media is going with cong.Cong also realises that it is congress responsibility to run the country. Other parties are mischivious elements in politics.

It is who initiates that matters by Ameet on 17 Jun 2009

The correct Heading of your news article should beMr Advani called and apologised and I reciprocated"You have given a totally different version as if MMS initiated the apology !!!

It is good that PM apologised by Chandra SG on 17 Jun 2009

The criticism of Advani during poll was more from the perspective of political angle, where the PM post has been made as second position to 10 janpath. Thanks to the opposition for raising that so well... today we have hope that 10 janpath will not have so much say in governing affairs.. and summarily it had helped Dr. Singh to emerge stronger.Advaniji has expressed regret that he had to indulge in show bitter talk.. right on May 16... He is gem of the person to have shown that gesture to the same man.. who humilated him by not responding to his.. NAMASKAR gesture.. few days before elections... I think, PM owed real apology for hurting Advaniji and may be he owed to say THANKS for making him stronger.. too!!

PM'S APOLOGY by B.K. GANESAN,BANGALORE-560 010 on 17 Jun 2009

BOTH SHRI L.K. ADVANI AND SHRI MANMOHAN SINGH DESERVE KUDOSFOR UPHOLDING THE TRADITION OF GIVE AND TAKE POLICY. THEY SHOULD BE TAKEN AS A ROLL MODEL FOR BEHAVING IN A DECENT MANNER IN PUBLIC LIFE BY LEADERS OF ALL POLITICAL PARTIES. ESPECIALLY POLITICIANS LIKE MS.JAYALALITHA, SHRI KARUNANIDHI, SHRI MULAYAM SINGH YADAV, MS. MAYAWATHI. IN A DEMOCRACTIC COUNTRY LIKE INDIA LEADERS SHOULD CONCENTRATE IN THE WELFARE OF THE PUBLIC AND NOT IN THEIR WELFARE BY TAKING INTO HEART WHAT HAS BEEN SAID AGAINST THEM BY OTHER PARTY LEADERS DURING THE TIME OF CAMPAIGN AND IN THE PROCESS OF DISCUSSION OR DEBATE IN THE ASSEMBLY AND IN PARLIAMENT. LET US HOPE WE WILL HAVE A STRONG RULING AND OPPOSITION PARTY FOR A HEALTHY DEMOCRACY. JAI BHARAT AND JAI HIND

Love and respect by R. Bhakther Solomon on 17 Jun 2009

It is great news to hear from Prime Minister that both he and Advaniji have exchanged “regret” for the unpleasant words they had to use during the election time. It shows the maturity of the two great leaders. No wonder, only these kinds of good behaviors keep our country going from strength to strength. Unfortunately this kind of magnanimity is absent at the states level. It was totally absent in Tamil Nadu. The political leaders here in Tamil Nadu are of different class. They do not have the courtesy of addressing even the senior party leaders with words of love and respect. No wonder development in Tamil nadu is lacking behind other states. Unfortunatly, leaders do not even greet each others when they accidently meet in Public /legislative chambers. As a result the younger generations learn only “hate” language but not the language of love, affection and respect.God save Tamil nadu.

welcome the gesture by veena on 17 Jun 2009

It doesnt matter who called first, but its definitely a welcome gesture from both Mr. Advani and Mr. Singh to forget the past and try to come to work together to solve the nation's problem. We shud stop being petty and try to have a healthy debatable condition without the hatredness. I definitely welcome the postive gesture from both the leaders. And wish them luck.

RESUME OF OUR PRIME MINISTER by yoggita on 17 Jun 2009

Well i have niether been a pro Congress nor Pro Manmohan Singh , but since i have read resume of our prime minister it really made me feel very proud to think that one of biggest democracies of the world is lead by such a learned man. High Roads by Jacob Mudanthangili, Boston on 17 Jun 2009

It is very promising to see the way Dr. Singh and Mr. Advani bringing civility to our political process. It is a good example for the lower level political leadership to follow. Political difference should be ideological not personal. Our country's best interest should be the focus of politicians. I congratulate the prime minister and the opposition leader for taking high roads in politics.

Misleading title by Indi on 17 Jun 2009

"When he (Advani) rang up on May 16 to congratulate on the election results, he expressed regret. I also conveyed my apologies if I had hurt him," the Prime Minister told"The title is misleading. It was Advani who called up MMS to apologise. Where as pro congress media has projected it as though it was MMS who apologised first.

Hari Om Hari by Prasad on 17 Jun 2009

NAYAN M.DESAI | 17-Jun-2009Dear Nayan, India is too diverse. Diversity brings everyone to the lowest common denominator. It would be like a well full of crabs. If one crab wants to get out, all others will for sure pull that thing back in to the well. India as a nation is a myth. In spirit, it never existed as a nation. It is not existing as a single nation now. It will never exist as a nation with single soul in the future.
