kolkata, April 25 The noose is tightening around the students studying in engineering colleges who had sought the help of the question paper leak racket to crack the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

Sources said Manas Patra, the alleged kingpin of the racket, has told the police about at least one such student. An Electronics Engineering student of Jadavpur University, who secured 73rd rank in the JEE last year, has been identified as the student who procured the leaked question paper last year. Patra has revealed that the father of the student, a lawyer at Ghatal court, had obtained the papers from him. Sources say the police visited the house of the student in Ghatal on Thursday.

Jadavpur University Registrar Rajat Bandopadhyay said the university would make available all information to the police. “We admit students on the basis of the ranks in the JEE,” Bandopadhyay said. He, however, did not reveal whether the police had contacted the university or not.

Sources in the university said the JU would try to assess the merit of the student if any charges are proved against him. It might assess the student’s mathematical and other skills while trying to figure out if he had the capabilities to crack the JEE with such a good rank.
