New Delhi, February 20 With a nine-storey building stacked with books, the library at Jawaharlal Nehru University is one of the biggest in Delhi. But according to its students, that is not enough to guarantee better book collection and other infrastructure.

To highlight their demands for a better library, the JNU Students' Union organised a demonstration outside the library today.

Shouting "halla bol", Sandeep Singh, JNUSU president, led the demonstration that consisted of around 200 students from various departments. "The library has been under construction for the last two years. New computers have been purchased but so far we have not been allowed to use any of the facilities," Sandeep complained. According to him, the timings of the library should be increased so that students can have more time to study.

Among the top priorities of the JNUSU is transparency in the library funds and involvement of students in book selection. "For me getting better books is the biggest priority. The library does not have too many books," said a student.

Krishan Gopal, the University librarian, told Newsline that the library has been undergoing a major upgradation in the last one year. In addition to a special reading section for the visually challenged, a new reading room and a 200-seater computer room is ready to be opened.

"It is just a matter of a few weeks before they will become functional," he said, adding that the computer room couldn't be opened earlier because of some power problems. Gopal informed that the University has allotted Rs 90 lakh to purchase books for this year alone. "We already have Rs 3 crore worth of online journal and another Rs 3 crore of print material," he said.

Replying to the student's demand for a transport within the campus, Gopal said they would look into the matter. "There is definitely a need for some public transport within the campus as it is very big. We might come with a solution very soon," he said.
