The five women students of the Jadavpur University (JU), who were allegedly harassed by the police and the CPM supporters on Saturday, filed a complaint against the police and a few local CPM workers on Saturday.
They reportedly wanted to file an FIR against the police and three members of the Ganatantrik Mahila Samiti — the CPM women wing, but were allowed to lodge only a general diary on Sunday.
Police had raided the rented residence of the students at Palbazar yesterday on the suspicion that they had active links with the Maoists. The police, however, managed to find only a few Maoist magazines and thus was not able to initiate any action against the students.
Debolina Chakraborty, one of the students, said: “The local CPM supporters and cadres were more interested in getting us arrested.”
“The women members of the samiti began the ruckus after the police left. They were soon followed by local CPM supporters and we were forced to hide inside our house,” said Somdatta Mukherjee, another student.
Earlier in the day, various organisations, owing allegiance to the CPM, held demonstrations at Palbazaar against Saturday’s incident. The organisations are also planning to hold demonstrations at the JU premises and 8B bus stand near the university on Monday.
