Kolkata, June 11 To boost engineering research and harness the best talent, Jadavpur University (JU) has tied up with the University of Virginia Tech(VT), USA and will provide dual PhD to its research scholars.

The university has introduced a four-year PhD program from this academic session in association with the VT university. The decision was taken by the executive council, the highest decision-making body of the university.

During the course, the students will spend 18 months each at both the institutions. Each student will have two guides, one each in the JU and the VT. The student will submit two different research theses at both the university on a same subject. A doctoral committee of the institutions will confer a dual doctoral degree on the candidates.

The research topics would relate with the subject of basic engineering mechanics, the university officials said.

“It’s a unique program and has not been adopted by any other university in the country. Our students will enjoy a better academic experience and a greater demand in job market than the usual PhDs,” said Partha Pratim Biswas, executive council member of the university.
