New Delhi The BJP's chief strategist and party general secretary Arun Jaitely stayed away from the party's crucial Central Election Committee meeting in the morning session in New Delhi on Friday, triggering speculations if everything was alright with the party on the eve of general elections.

While there are other issues too, Jaitley is said to be hugely upset with the appointment of Sudhanshu Mittal as "sah-prabhari" (co-incharge) for party's election campaign for the North-East. Mittal's appointment was announced by party president Rajnath Singh a couple of days ago.

When contacted, Jaitley told this reporter that "he was busy in a meeting." One of his aides said that "he was meeting Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar before the BJP-JD (U) seat-sharing arrangement is finalised at the CEC". States like Andhra Pradesh were discussed in the morning at the CEC on Friday. “He worked till late in the evening on Thursday fine-tuning the final campaign, which shall begin on March 16. So why this fuss about his absence at the morning session of CEC today," asked his aide.
