Jalandhar, January 30 In a crackdown on house tax defaulters, Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) authorities today sealed six buildings in the town today, whose owners had failed to pay the tax despite repeated reminders.

Six buildings, including shops, which faced the MC wrath are situated in Green Model Town, Income Tax Colony, Model House, Cheema Nagar and Golden Avenue areas. The MCJ had identified over 500 defaulters of house tax.

The corporation had given enough time to owners of such buildings to pay their dues, but majority of them failed to do so. The MCJ had also extended the deadline and even waived the interest on the pending amount, but the defaulters did not pay heed, prompting the authorities to crack the whip on some of them today.

MC sources said about Rs 12 to 14 crore were still lying outstanding towards the defaulters. They said among the major defaulters were government departments including those of PWD, police and civil administration and electricity.

MC Commissioner CS Talwar said the crackdown would continue against the other defaulters if they failed to fall in line.

While admitting that the government departments were among the major defaulters, he said talks were on to sort out the matter.
