New Delhi, February 2: The five naval personnel, who were killed on Friday night on board warship INS 'Jalashwa', died due to inadvertently inhaling Hydrogen Sulphide gas, leaking from one of the compartments of the vessel.

The personnel comprised a repair party, which was working on one of the shafts, when the leak took place, a Naval spokesman said on Saturday.

"The Naval personnel were carrying out maintenance work and died by inadvertently inhaling the leaking gas and not due to any fire or any other cause," he said.

Five Naval personnel were killed and three injured critically in during a Naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal on Friday.

The accident took place on board the Indian Navy's latest acquisition INS 'Jalashwa' while the ship was taking part in the Naval exercises between Visakhapatanam and Port Blair, the Indian Navy spokesman said.

The deceased sailors have been identified as KVR Krishna Rao, D R Kumar Chaitanya, Ramesh Kumar Nayak, Deepak Shivran, and Narendra Yadav, all members of the repair team.

Among those injured are Lt Cdr Sweth Gupta, Lt Ruchir Prasad and electrician Yatish Pawar.

All the three injured are being airlifted to Port Blair from the ship for further medical treatment.

An IAF AN-32 transport aircraft has been positioned at Port Blair to bring back the dead bodies to Vishakhapatnam.

INS Jalashwa, a ship landing dock previously called USS TRETON, was acquired from the US Navy just a month back.

Defence Minister A K Antony has expressed his deep regret at the loss of lives.

Jalashwa Tragedy by ganesh on 03 Feb 2008

Dear Editor,It is always happens in India where safety of human life is considered as an option. and people are also least bothered on this. In my native place we find an accident per week with lot of human casualty; mainly due to overspeed or reckless driving. There is no initiative from the authority to address this issue. Drivers mainly heavy vehicle run away after the accident. Public least bothered as long as they become the victim. H2S is most dangerous gas and it is alway expected in Offshore activity. Any idiot in this business can tell you about this. However our government spent billions on weapon purchase not interested to get proper detection system and safety gears to protect the people working on these area. If defense minister has got a little bit of sense should order an inquiry to find out the lapse from their safety officer. And guilty to be punished. You can not expetct this from Indian government

Minister, you have even higher responsibility. by Anand Babu on 02 Feb 2008

Expressing deep regret is not the only thing I expect the defence minister to do. Think and act, how to prevent even one more incident like this from happening? Do you feel like those killed are your brothers or sons? If you do not feel there will be countless more such incidents. Sending people to repair with out proper planning and asseing the risk involved is a mistake of the leadership. If they had worn protective gear or there were alarms to alert them of the gas leak the death of these sons, fathers , brothers in some families could be avoided. This is utter foolish to send peolple to death. My sympathies to the grieving families. May the dead souls rest in peace.

it is not minister's fault by vijay on 03 Feb 2008

what the poor minister can do he dosen't know about ship. the safety analysis dept of the ship has to be blamed.
