Jammu Several militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba, holding up in concrete hideouts in Batidhar forest of Mendhar in Poonch, continued to engage security forces in a fierce gun-battle for the fifth day on Sunday.

Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, K Rajendra Kumar said, “The encounter is going on and the Batidhar forest remains cordoned off from all sides.”

“Some top militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba are suspected to be taking shelter in concrete hideouts, built deep inside the forest area,” the IGP added.

One Special Police Officer (SPO) of J-K Police, Naresh Kumar, and a jawan of the Indian Army, Naik R K Singh, have been killed in the encounter so far. Four terrorists, too, have been killed.

One Junior Commissioned Officer Rakesh Kumar is also suspected to have been killed, though the Army authorities are still terming him missing.

Sources said that there was not much exchange of fire on Sunday owing to harsh weather conditions but a few underground concrete hideouts were destroyed with the security forces looking for the remaining hideouts in the forest.

Apart from Romeo Force’s 29th unit and 26 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, the authorities have rushed para units of special forces to the area besides some additional troops, sources said.

Police have arrested a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector Muzaffar Shah from Bhati Dhar for helping the militants in taking shelter in the area, they said, adding that Shah had retired in 2003.

The operation started around 4 pm on January 1.

No margins of error this time by Karan Singh on 09 Jan 2009

This is a sensitive issue. Our policemen helping them with shelter is unjust. There should be highest order of sentence for any individual engaging in activities that are against National interest. This encounter should be set as an example for not only infiltrators but also for those helping them in their henious intentions. The New CM

The two-faced us! by anshuman on 05 Jan 2009

Post Mumbai terror attacks, everyone praised the heroic role of our forces in neutralizing the enemy. The electronic media ran special segments to commemorate the heroic efforts of the men who laid their lives. But shouldn’t they also do it for the ones who lose their lives in encounters in terrorist-torn Kashmir. The media should do it for every one of them, or don’t do it at all!

Blast the hideouts by J.M.Manchanda on 05 Jan 2009

The loss of lives, which the militants manage to inflict is surprising. Since it is forest area with little possibility of collateral damage, the security forces should use heavy artillery to blast the hideouts and reduce their own losses. It is also surprising how concrete caves were built and occupied by the militatants in the thick of the forest without anybody ever noticing them.

Our response to terrorists. by KVSKumar on 05 Jan 2009

The head should have been that "Pak sponsored war enters 2nd month" because what happened on 26/11 is iindeed a war on India, although to which our political formation at Indraprasht is yet to respond, may be awaiting Uncle Sam's nod. Such fierce resistence to the present shows that there are large number of terrorists. The army should use helicopter gunships and destroy the bunkers and structure where militants are hiding./

Salute to brave martyrs by Sandeep R. on 05 Jan 2009

Poonch encounter by Hemant G Ketkar on 05 Jan 2009

It is very surprising that why Indian Government not taking up with Pakistan on this subject also. Because, it is very clear that terrorists are fighting with Indian force in Jammu border with the help of Pakistani arny, Pakistani administration and Pakistani people in overall. So, we should not only stick to the handing over of terrorists responsible for Mumbai Bomb blast, but paralely, these points should be raised in the international forum and also directly with Pakistani counterpart.

buncker buster by gurpreet on 05 Jan 2009

Loosing soldiers for such incidents can not be tolrated and I am not sure why Air force is not being included to burst the concrete buildings.

Use air power please... by Saumil on 05 Jan 2009

If the militant's position is so well defined and is away from civilian areas, would air power not be a better option ? Even one jawan's life is a cost too much for something that can be done with precision guided weapons. Is it that we lack such weapons ? Puzzling at best...
