New Delhi, February 17 The Japanese tourist, who tried to commit suicide yesterday by jumping off a railway overbridge near Moti Bagh flyover, came to India on a tourist visa on February 13, police said today.

The tourist, who has been identified as Nshinnosyke Okqno, has been shifted to Max Hospital from Safdarjung Hospital and is unconscious, police said.

Twenty eight-year-old Okqno was staying in a Karol Bagh hotel and reportedly hired one Jyoti Travel Agency to plan his sightseeing.

“He had come alone and nobody here knows him. Embassy officials have come for him and information about him is being gathered from the embassy,” said an official. His passport, issued on January 29, has also been found.

The police have not yet decided on booking him for attempt to commit suicide but are consulting embassy officials “since offence has been committed”.

The two JNU interpreters have also not been able to speak to him yet. Now, embassy officials are trying to contact his family members to know the actual reason for attempting suicide.

According to eyewitnesses, he was sitting on the railing of the overbridge at around 3.45 pm yesterday. He was holding on to a hoarding for over an hour when passers-by tried to dissuade him.

He kept warning he would jump off even after a PCR van reached the spot, before he finally jumped on to the tracks at around 4.15 pm when some fire and police officers tried to reach him.

He was taken to AIIMS Trauma care centre before being shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. He is admitted at Max with severe head injuries and multiple fractures in his left leg but out of danger, doctors said.
