Chennai Launching a day-long fast to express solidarity with the Sri Lankan Tamils, AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa on Monday slammed the Centre and the DMK government in Tamil Nadu for not having any "genuine concern" for the Tamils in the island nation.

"The UPA Government failed miserably by not despatching immediate humanitarian aid. Why did not the Government send relief material such as food, medicines and clothes? The Centre, as well as the ruling DMK (which is a constituent of the UPA) have no genuine concerns for the (Sri Lankan) Tamil people," she said.

Jayalalithaa said though the fast, aimed at pressuring the Centre to use its good offices with Sri Lanka to declare an immediate ceasefire in the island nation, "would not bring relief to the "hunger-struck Tamils," it would, however, convey the "sentiments and anger of the people of Tamil Nadu against the State and Central governments."

Announcing that her party would collect funds for the Sri Lankan Tamils, she made the first personal contribution of Rs five lakh.

Describing the Congress and DMK's decision to continue their alliance as "borne out of absurd courage," Jayalalithaa, who had recently made a vain bid to woo Congress by urging it to leave the "DMK quicksand," said the people will give a "drubbing" to the alliance in the elections.

Besides party leaders and hundreds of workers, AIADMK ally and CPI state Secretary D Pandian also joined the fast being observed near the Chepauk cricket stadium.

Amma on Diet by Dingo on 09 Mar 2009

Jayalalitha is on diet, so she is making the most out of it.. This is the funniest hunger strike I have heard of.. 9am to 5pm like office hourse.. she would have ate till her neck from 8.20 to 8.50 and then started the drama.. As long as people are ignorant and foolish, politicians like amma, blind man KK and theie rowdy goons will rule rooster.. Jai Bharath.. Jai Hind

Jayalalitha on one Day Fast by Rajesh Vyas on 09 Mar 2009

Why is she going only on a Day Long Fast. If she really cares for the Tamils of SRI Lanks, she should proceed on fast UNTO DEATH. Then only will the Central Government respond to her concers and demands. TOKENISM is absolutley meaningless and it implies that her concern is only short lived. And Do not forget that the elections to Lok Sabha are round the corner, so this publicity stunt is for votes of the local Tamils and not for the Sri Lankan Tamils.

LTTE by Indian on 09 Mar 2009

Indians don't care a damn about TN politicians and their controversial issues! She can continue her fast until she losses all the wealthy fat she gained for the past decade. The blind KK can also can jump into Bay of Bengal.Same applies to the all Tamils in India. These folks don't care a damn about India. Let the Tamils lick their wounds in Sri Lankas for their LTTE adventures!

Fasting by Vidyadhar on 09 Mar 2009

Fasting is good for her health

Needs to lose weight by Jay on 09 Mar 2009

She needs to lose much weight. Good for her. Most have absolutely so sympathy for the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Neither should the Indian Govt. do anything on the matter. There cannot be a separate area or part for a minority in a nation. Will the US secede Michigan if the Arab population there increases, or California for that matter. This will also raise a situaion with Kashmir which is what Jayalaitha, a categorical moron, does not realize. By a stretch, the same situaion exists with Israel.

Minority Souvernity by Indian on 09 Mar 2009

You are absolutely right! Certainly, Tamils in Sri Lanka or Malaysia are not Indians and don't care a dam about India. Not sure, why Indians should waste their time and energy on these issues. Also, it's exactly the same problem in J

Indian Fools by pandian on 09 Mar 2009
