At SD College, Sector 32, around 150 students have been placed with various companies this session; and the placements are going on. As many as 24 students have been picked up by Wipro, 34 by Indus IndBank, 16 by Convergys, 20 by Bank of America to name a few companies. The others companies that visited the campus include WNS, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Keaneworldzen, etc.
Placement Co-ordinator Dr Meeru Sehgal says that placements are held for the undergraduate and postgraduate students. “Mostly BPOs approach us. Some banks also offer jobs in the sales departments. The packages they offer vary from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. The postgraduates are offered jobs at managerial positions also and the pay packages are better.”
The company representatives hold pre-placement talk, informing about the profile of a company and the opportunities available. Written tests are held and the shortlisted candidates are then interviewed.
“In this session, we have seen lots of BSc students showing interest in the placements. However, a majority of the students prefer to opt for higher studies. Especially, the commerce students do want to pursue postgraduate programme. Bright students are not satisfied by BPOs alone,” says Dr Sehgal.
A similar situation is witnessed in other colleges as well. Government College for Girls, Sector 42, has seen around 130 students placed in the session and companies are still visiting the campus. “The response has been better than the past years. But a few factors need to be considered when it comes to placements. The meritorious students are not attracted to BPOs. For the students who are in need of a job, these are beneficial. While earlier, students from undergraduate classes could not think of a job where they could earn more than Rs 10,000 a month, these companies have offered them opportunities,” says Dr Dalip.
“Girls are not very comfortable with nightshifts. Their parents want them to study further. In fact, we have asked the companies to organise counseling session for parents,” he adds.
In Government College, Sector 46, around 100 students have landed up with jobs in various companies. College Principal Dr K S Saluja says the students are choosy. They want the best. The students who have done postgraduation certainly have a better scope.
The companies want students having 60 per cent or above score in their exams. Also, an all-round personality is required. This has made many colleges train students in personality development and communication skills. At GCG-42 a Youth Club has been established. Students who are interested in placements need to become members of the club. Here, they get training for appearing in interviews, communication skills, etc. The placement cell at SD College is also giving training to the students for interviews. The placement cells of colleges stay active throughout the year with companies approaching them. Some have placement brochures ready. From January to March placements pick up gear.
