The shoe did not hit the minister and the journalist, a senior reporter with Dainik Jagran, was taken into custody.
The press conference was being held at the Congress headquarters where Chidambaram was presenting his party's report card on terrorism. The journalist asked the minister whether letting Tytler off the hook ahead of the elections was not politically motivated.
To which Chidambaram replied that CBI had only presented a report to the court and it was up to the court to either accept or reject it. The journalist wanted to ask another question but Chidambaram said he did not want to get into an argument and refused to take further questions.
The journalist then threw his shoe at the minister, saying 'I protest'.
It is the first of its kind incident in India but throwing shoes at political leaders has become a high-profile form of protest. The trend was started by an Iraqi journalist who had thrown shoes at former US President George Bush at a press conference in Baghdad last year.
Thereafter, the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was meted a similar treatment while delivering a speech at Cambridge University. The Israeli ambassador to Sweden was also hit by a shoe when he was addressing an audience in Stockholm University.
Jarnail Singh released
Journalist Jarnail Singh who hurled a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram at a press conference was released by police after brief detention.
Station House Officer of Tughlaq Road Police station Anil Kumar Yadav told reporters that the scribe has been freed for the time being.
"No case has been registered against him. He has regretted about his action," the official said, adding that the journalist was questioned for his action and then he was released.
After being freed, the Sikh journalist of a Hindi daily, who has caused a flutter in the political circle, said the issue that he raised was an appropriate issue and the victims should get justice.
"May be my way of protest was wrong," said the scribe who later left with his journalist friends and Sikh supporters.
Meanwhile, Sunita Tiwari, who claimed to be his lawyer and had come to meet him at the police station, alleged that she was not allowed to talk to her client.
"I was misbehaved. The SHO asked the constables to take me out of the room. I wanted to talk to Jarnail as he was mentally disturbed," she said.
BJP condemns shoe hurling incident
BJP condemned hurling of a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram by a Sikh journalist at a press conference in New Delhi. "We condemn the incident," BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj said in New Delhi.
Jarnail Singh of a Hindi daily hurled a shoe at Chidambaram protesting against CBI's clean chit to senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler accused in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
Chidambaram was addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters.

Why is that Politicians always ask for such behaviour from public.USA has one BUSH but we have 100s of BUSH type rogue politicians in India.Public is fed-up of these politicians - its obvious. Now Public will not leave a opportunity to teach these politicians a lesson.GOOD GOOD.
chidambaram deserves it
Throwing Chappals is the in-thing in India now. We are a great people for imitating others. In Kerala, the most literate State in India, they do not throw Chappals! In Kerala however, this ['throwing'] has been a usual procedure during strikes and Bandhs which they have daily. As usual, the CPM, the biggest Party, showed the way. For the past 40 years, striking or agitating CPM guys have thrown things at non-participants.They do not throw shoes [few wear shoes] or chappals though, because both are costly. Instead, they throw human excreta on the enemies. Striking government employees and teachers use nothing else, because they are educated, perhaps.A few years ago, a member of the State Human Rights Commission took some action against some CPM civil servants and woke up one morning to find his entire house painted with human excreta. The Police refused to collect the material evidence and the investigations were a non-starter.During Election time now, CPM cadres rough up journalists that they do not like, everywhere. So far, the journos have been protesting it by holding protest marches. Since 'throwing' is more effective, they might soon turn to it to protest. One hopes Kerala media men would not use the favourite Kerala material to throw at politicians.Perhaps, they should. They are the 'model state' that the rest of India looks up to.
wht abt shoe throwing on renuka /sonia who made innocent men and their mothers and sisters to suffer by imposing tooth less laws on them, i think men should think abt this they(congress people) should also repent and suffer wht they did we should revert this actions of cong people with 100% interest
Jernelsing's act is indication of UNWORTHYNESS of politicians to lead the people of this country. I affraid, this should not be a start to react the anger towards unworthy leaders in the same fashion. the deaf
Boot throwing to show public anger can be justified in India where there is no justice but the receiver was the wrong politician. There are only two genuine, honest and caring politicians and they are MM Singh and PC. Others do deserve Boot treatment.
It is MMS and PC who deserve most the blame for the country"s economic down turn. Both held the posts to direct the health of economy of country.
Credit crunch is global phenomenon. All the economies of the world are suffering. It is silly to blame 2 people for the global problems. You seem to be an intelligent man so why be so ill-logical?
It only shows that the Indian legal syatem give justice to ordinary people. The only way to get a tainted politician out is to boot him out.
We Indians boast of India being world's greatest democracy and yet our journalists indulge in such uncivilised way to express their view points. There are better ways of lodging one's protest and any journalist worth his salt would know it. It's a pity that Mr Jarnail Singh has to copy a journalist fom Iraq where both democracy and journalism are in their infant stage.
I think it will work. Shoe throwing might not be as civilized, but well, who is civilized? You have to speak the language which other party can understand.....
It is the fundamental right of an Indian to express his views in democratic India but any civilised Indian believing in democratic ways should hang his head in shame at the behaviour of Mr Jarnail Singh who calls himself a journalist. There are better and effective ways of protesting.A so called journalist from India, the largest democratic state in the world, stealing a leaf from the book of a Journalist in Iraq where democracy is in its infancy, and throwing his shoe in a press conference at the Home Minister! It's a disgrace!
In my opinion jernail tried to copy iraqi journalist and got succeed in getting fame but lost self respect in common man's eye. Chidambaram has shown his maturity
He did a good job. We All are with Jarnail Singh
The mode of protest was abviously wrong but it was the reflection of anguish at inordinate delay and possible miscarriage of justice. It is a sad truth that politicians involved in rioting usually manage to go scot free in INdia whether in 1984 Delhi or 2002 Gujarat. The arrest of Maya Kodnani is no more than the exception that proves the rule. Till these outrages are seen as attacks against specific 'communities' to be avenged by those particular communities, nothing fruitful would come out. Only when atrocities against Muslims in Gujarat, Sikhs in Delhi, Hindus and Sikhs in the days of Punjab terrorism and Kashmiri Pundits in J
In a country where politicians throw mikes on one another in side the parliament,it is very small issue that a journalist has thrown shoes on the minister P Chidambaram. In our democracy, both the journalist and the politician represent rogue groups and it is not a surprise what has happened.Chidambaram deserves this treatment. He thinks he can mesmerise every one with his american accent english speech. When oil sector officers went on peaceful strike after giving notice 25 days in advance he crushed them. What could he do when his own clan of lawyers went into rampage in Tamilnadu. He can cheat people. He has cheated the oil sector officers community with a pittance of salary revision but he cant cheat the God.This is only the beginning. He has started getting the prize for his sins.
There is no difference between those culprits and Jarnail. P Chidambaram excused him. WE understand his anguish. It shows only the immaturity. Sighs are known for their patriotism and their respectful culture in India. But this clearly shows how as Indians we all are emotionally unstable and ready to burst out with a slight provocation/instigation. When are we going to be balanced and matured as Nation and as individuals. We hurt and insult each other endlessly.PC is a very decent politician. He does not deserve this kind of treatment.
unless the congress change their view on People in tamilealam, the same incident may happen to congress in tamilnadu. Now they(congress) should realise the feeling of tamilians in tamilnadu. All congress leaders deserve the same.Sonia never express her opinion on tamil people in srilanka. Everyday tamils are dead there. We should teach sonia and congress. Many times pakistan attacked India and many people have been died. But we are still open to talk with pakistan for peace. But opposite reaction for LTTE. How?
This person should be sent out of India. There are plenty of people outside India working for a seperate Sikh country. He can join them.
Lets all get together and throw shoes at all the corrupt and ignorant politicians of India. 1) Narendra Modi2) Uma Bharti3) Mayawati4) Amar Singh5) George Fernandes6) Shivraj Patil7 ) Sharad Pawar8 ) Raj Thakarey and the list goes on. I hope someone does the same to these people too
well done JARNAIL these politicians deserve it
Using physical force for protesst is wrong and undemocratic. All good Indians will certainly support jairnal's anguish and agree with him.this protest must be shown in coming elections by denying congress to return to power. It has been cheating this country for the last 50 years. For every election, they have same agenda and same slogan. POVERTY. This country will be excellent with out congres for next 1000 years.
The reporter Jarnail Singh of Dainik Jagran misbehaved in a press conference by hurling a shoe at Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram with vengeance. It was an unexpected and uncivilized imitation by the reporter as few weeks ago a reporter in Afghanistan threw a shoe on President Bush. Bush took it lightly saying that it is accepted in today’s democracy. P. Chidambaram also pardoned the foolish reporter. A mass media reporter is expected to be ethical, civilized, unbiased without any prejudice and is supposed to report “Just the Facts”. Here Jarnail has not only misbehaved, but also damaged the image of the profession of a media reporter and has been a shame to a leading newspaper. A journalist has a strong weapon – PEN - to protest if he doesn’t agree with the interviewer’s viewpoints. Reporter has an opportunity of feature writing where he can criticize any power and express his views freely in his daily. Now onwards, people may not have the same respect for media persons aft
The journalist did not show maturity. I would have condemend this, I would have protected the leader, if it was 20 yrs back. But now, I will not condemn. I will not protect. Just I will watch. Because India has lost its soul. Indians have sold their soul to a foreigner like slaves. Secular and democratic tradition of hindus was ABUSED.
The report "Who are the Guilty" clearly mentions the role of Congress, police and administration during the 1984 anti-sikh pograms. The report was made by People's Union For Democratic Rights (PUDR) andPeople's Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL)- Rajni Kothari and Gobinda Mukhoty. It is a Worth read if one needs to know the truth. One can find the report on-line by searching through google.
my dear journo friend, do not degrade ur shoes by throwing the same at Congress leaders. ur shoes have better dignity than all those Congress pigs
Maybe Mr. Chidambaram is the wrong person, but other politicians from Congress anyways deserve this treatment. The only other exception i would have would be the PM
Was Chidambaram delaying and denying justice and a part of the larger conspiracy by Congress to hoodwink the nation? Why did CBI give a clean chit at this time? Why did Congress give ticket to Tytler at this time ?were they trying to make the people forget the sikh riots over a period ?Another 25 years the next generation will probably forget this. Then they will forget the fact that even judiciary and CBI were accomplices in this!!! It is the duty of the judiciary to not delay justice and deny the justice. But what is happening here is "Delay and denying justice " a plan chalked out behind the scenes by Congress , the CBI and ....
