Journalist

New Delhi A journalist threw a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram at a press conference on Tuesday, protesting against the minister's reply on his question on CBI's clean chit to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 Sikh riots case.

The shoe did not hit the minister and the journalist, a senior reporter with Dainik Jagran, was taken into custody.

The press conference was being held at the Congress headquarters where Chidambaram was presenting his party's report card on terrorism. The journalist asked the minister whether letting Tytler off the hook ahead of the elections was not politically motivated.

To which Chidambaram replied that CBI had only presented a report to the court and it was up to the court to either accept or reject it. The journalist wanted to ask another question but Chidambaram said he did not want to get into an argument and refused to take further questions.

The journalist then threw his shoe at the minister, saying 'I protest'.

It is the first of its kind incident in India but throwing shoes at political leaders has become a high-profile form of protest. The trend was started by an Iraqi journalist who had thrown shoes at former US President George Bush at a press conference in Baghdad last year.

Thereafter, the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was meted a similar treatment while delivering a speech at Cambridge University. The Israeli ambassador to Sweden was also hit by a shoe when he was addressing an audience in Stockholm University.

Jarnail Singh released

Journalist Jarnail Singh who hurled a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram at a press conference was released by police after brief detention.

Station House Officer of Tughlaq Road Police station Anil Kumar Yadav told reporters that the scribe has been freed for the time being.

"No case has been registered against him. He has regretted about his action," the official said, adding that the journalist was questioned for his action and then he was released.

After being freed, the Sikh journalist of a Hindi daily, who has caused a flutter in the political circle, said the issue that he raised was an appropriate issue and the victims should get justice.

"May be my way of protest was wrong," said the scribe who later left with his journalist friends and Sikh supporters.

Meanwhile, Sunita Tiwari, who claimed to be his lawyer and had come to meet him at the police station, alleged that she was not allowed to talk to her client.

"I was misbehaved. The SHO asked the constables to take me out of the room. I wanted to talk to Jarnail as he was mentally disturbed," she said.

BJP condemns shoe hurling incident

BJP condemned hurling of a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram by a Sikh journalist at a press conference in New Delhi. "We condemn the incident," BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj said in New Delhi.

Jarnail Singh of a Hindi daily hurled a shoe at Chidambaram protesting against CBI's clean chit to senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler accused in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

Chidambaram was addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters.

Glad he did it by Jas on 08 Apr 2009

Though it is hard to justify what the journalist did, yet I am glad he had the guts to show his disgust at what congress party has done to the justice and political system of India. The whole bunch of so called high command of Congress deserve such treatment for keeping truely evil people like Tytler in the party. Shame on those idiots too who voted for Jagdish Tytler.

Recruitment in Indian Military by pamameen on 08 Apr 2009

PART ONE:>>>Dear readers, please weigh my balanced and logical (or illogical) comments, observation and scenario. When a minority community does a discrediting act, we tend to scold the entire community and tend to deny them their fair share and equity. Indian constitution treats the Sikhs as belonging to a sect of Hinduism and not as non-Hindus..that much importance and elevation given to them. Why? In what way are they extra-ordinary? The Golden temple storming caused the mutiny of 2000 Sikh military recruits, Indian military still recruits Sikhs in large numbers and even the majority of the mutineers had been taken back? Why?It has been a traditional belief that Sikh belong to the warrior race. Modern wars are not fought with swords and spears, hence even the so called non-warrior races, with intelligence and mental bravery can fight equally well. For the same reason Napalese Gurkhas have been given a special place of honour in serving the Indian defence forces.Foreigners anyway

You should not delay and deny justice by Dr.G.srinivasan on 08 Apr 2009

It is the first of its kind incident in India but throwing shoes at political leaders has become a high-profile form of protest. This used to happen in Tamilnadu many of the DMK workers have done this at other party meetings!!!! But if the intention to commit a crime itself a punishable offence I have felt the same. You cannot delay and deny justice you can do only one!!!!

Sikhs in the Indian Military by pamameen on 08 Apr 2009

PART TWO:>>>Researches have done analysis of the representation of each state of India in the armed forces. The figures reveal that the percentage representation of Andhra is only 4%that of Kashmir only 2%( that is about the same percentage for the entire Muslim minority of India, though firmly disproved, they are considered as not loyal to India, though confirmed cases indicate more anti-national activities involving the people of the majority community), but the Sikhs outnumber others by a huge margin, In 1997 representation of Sikhs was 24% But no one dares to ask the most sensitive question why the so called affirmative action ( called reservation) in favour of the Dalits( the Scheduled castes and scheduled Tribe and the most back ward communities) has not been extended in the case of recruitment to defence services as it has been to all other services including IAS, IPS and IFS. Let us make a difference between individual mutineers and law abiding communities.

"Truth and Reconciliation" is the only solution by Amar duggal on 08 Apr 2009

Disappointing, but it is real disappointing that no political party has the heart to resolve the Delhi riot issue and bring a good resolution to this issue. According to honorable journalist Shri Kuldip Nayyar, we still have the time to have a "Truth and Reconciliation" type commission to put an end to this issues. Without a good resolution, please do not expect this thing to go away. It will never happen even if you kill the whole Sikh community.

Patiala by Bhanu Pratap on 08 Apr 2009

I too would throw the shoe at Chidambaram or any congress person. All Hindus should throw shoes at congress for killing Sikh brethren in 1984 and not showing slightest remorse!

Flip flop by Dan on 08 Apr 2009

Good One Mr Jarnail singhji I guess we need more of these ppl in our country. Bloody rogues all of the politicians. No matter how much educated they may be they deserve nothing more than shoes and chappals on their head. Get some more shoes on few others too. Particularly for congress leaders.

treatment meted out to sikhs in indipendent INDIA by gbsingh on 08 Apr 2009

Siukhs have made so many scrifices for the majority community and their country for over 300 years. It was the greatest blunder of Government of India to have used its mighty army against the sikhs on a day of shaheedi divis of their 5thguru troughout Punjab killing inhumanly thousands of innocent unarmed devotees who were in these gurdawaras for prayers.over 50000 persons were estimated to have been bruetly killed by mighty indian army using all the powers and guns under their command..If two security gaurds killed the prime minister what was the faust of innocent law abiding sikhs in delhi and almost and throughout india to be killed at the intigation and guidence of mighty congress leaders.even door darshan tried to intigate and the then pM of india saying that when a big tree falls earth is bound to shake.in a way justifying the inhuman carnage.it is over25 years now not one culprit has been punished sofar.12commissions appointed, persons named by them are given clean chits ?

One shoe is nothing compared to 1984 atrocities by Vikaas on 08 Apr 2009

God Bless Jarnail Singh for his bravery AND restraint. He did not throw the shoe, just tossed it in disgust. The Indian politicians are disgusting cockroaches. We need reform and revolution in our country.

Support by j.kaur on 08 Apr 2009

The Sikhs of the United States stand in solidarity with our brother Jarnail Singh for his strong action in the face of yet more political doublespeak. With the 25 year anniversary of this massacre fast aproaching, it's about time for Congress to come clean about the Anti-Sikh Pogrom of 1984.Jail Tytler and Kumar. And a rain of shoes on those who would prevent justice.

The loving shoes of protest. by shantam prem on 08 Apr 2009

After Iraq and than India, i am sure this will be the world's most favourate way of attacking the corrupt and onesided decisions of people in power. God bless those who stand up but with non violent ways.

well done by xyz on 07 Apr 2009

journalist did a good job but i think he should have thrown a hand grenade.

Protest. by Prajaya on 07 Apr 2009

The timing of the incident was not correct. These politicians should be shown shoes when the come begging for votes, later to enjoy in luxuries. The incident was no doubt desperate after all the protest for last 25 years appeared to have failed, but is there any other way left when no one is listening (not even esteemed judges). This incident should be seen as an eye opener just like Bhagat Singh did a 'ear opener'.

journalist hurls shoe at PC by SLB on 07 Apr 2009

If a man hurts you, and you hurt him back, it does not eliminate the first evil, it only creates one more evil in the world.May our people develop and maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect! Thanks!!

good way to protest by KT on 07 Apr 2009

Its little unfortunate to hit the home minister that too PC with a SHOE but the way CBI toppled the case is bad. Everyone knows that Tytler and Sajjan Singh were 100%involved in that massacre. They should be punished similar to militants

shoe throw by freddie Indian on 07 Apr 2009

Shoe-throwing protest by Hero Vaz on 07 Apr 2009

Chidambaram deserved a bigger and dirtier shoe thrown at him for the disgraceful way in which the Govt. of India has dealt with Pak on the issue of Paki terrorism.

Journalist hurls shoe at P Chidambaram by Jameel Ahmaf Khan on 07 Apr 2009

The incident was very unfortunate. Despite lucid explanation by the Home Minister there is no reason for Mr, Jarnail Singh to indulge in an activity he did. While I share his anguish It is unfrotuante that we as country have failed to bring to justice the perpetrators of crimes again and again without a fail. I complement Mr. Chidambram for his dgnified response and composure during the incident.

best ayd by alok on 07 Apr 2009

On the contrary this is the best day for India ...without hurling a bomb we have conveyed our taste and distaste....bravo

SIKHS AND INDIA by DA on 07 Apr 2009

This sikh has shamed the Sacrifice all sikhs made for the country. Every Indian children associate sikhs with bravery. Here is a coward sikh who has brought the Sikh community and the Nation INDIA shame. Sikhs are in the Army, Navy, Airforce are known for the valour, strength and bravery. A shameful act like this brings only disgrace to the Nation and some fools in India applaud. What a nation and what a bunch of people, India has..!

PC Shoe incident by S on 07 Apr 2009

It is a shame that the Sikh - who they call a "lion" had to resort to such shameful act; this is lunatic - a minister of stature of PC who has dedicated his life to Indian polity should not be insulted this way; shame on the politicians and commentators who support such acts;

Bad example by hemant on 07 Apr 2009

He was a journalist and it is a sad day when see these acts. PC is one of the better person and this only lowers the image of whole community (particularly after so much of support). This is nothing but a copy cat act. Brave are those who are protesting in Delhi. They know fight is hard but not seeking shortcut. This journalist must be made example of and punished to the maximum. There is no place for such acts.We all agree what congress did was wrong but you can always take revenge through votes in democracy.Shame on SGPC and many sikhs community organizations for supporting this. This is what your heros will look like, and this is what your kids will look upto?
