New Delhi, January 2 A team of two judges will personally inspect the site for the 2010 Commonwealth Games Village following claims the proposed construction may sound the death knell for the eco-system around the Yamuna river.

Justices A K Sikri and Rekha Sharma, who are hearing a batch of petitions opposing construction on the site, will visit the DDA site on Friday afternoon. The judges are also expected to inspect other development projects in the same area.

The government, through Solicitor General G E Vahanvati, had earlier submitted a layout plan chalking out details of the project to counter the environmentalists’ petitions.

In the plan, the solicitor general submitted that construction had been divided into several pockets by the DDA after receiving clearance from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).

Environmentalist Rajinder Singh had alleged the DDA was acting in contempt of a court order prohibiting construction of any permanent structure on the riverbed. The DDA had denied reports by NGOs and NEERI that construction on the riverbed may damage its underground water recharging potential, Singh said in his petition.
