Mumbai, January 4: Strongly defending policemen in connection with the molestation of two NRI women near a five star hotel during the new year celebrations, the Shiv Sena took a swipe at the media and especially the television channels for sensationalising the matter.

In an editorial in Samana, the Shiv Sena mouthpiece blamed the media for taking pot shots at the police and trying to behave as moral crusader when the reality was that they were being spurred by competition and the channels were trying to outdo one another in order to increase their TRP ratings.

Supporting the police, the editorial said how can the policemen be held accountable for such incidents which take place when the society itself is responsible for promoting drinking and disco culture.

The paper said the police did not falter in their duty in connection with the molestation case. But still they have been made the target of criticism and blame by the media.

The channels were trying to project themselves as crusaders of morality, but the real thing that is driving them is the urge to overtake one another in the competition, it added.

While condemning what happened to the two women, the daily said one should not lose sight of the fact that this was because of the pub culture that has permeated into society.

"While making the police the target of their attack, one should not forget that the two girls and their guardians had gone to the hotel for drinks.”

It said what happened was shameful, but it is the society which has forgotten culture and values. The society must introspect, it added.
