Kolkata, May 9 The proposed move of the Presidency College to do away with admission test is still shrouded in uncertainty. Owing to pressure from various quarters, there are signs of return to the earlier decision.

The authorities at the moment are of the opinion that the decision to hold admission tests can be reconsidered on basis of the opinion of faculty and students.

“The students have been asked to come up with their opinion on the issue of admission tests by next Thursday, after which the teachers’ council will meet again on the issue,” said Sanjib Chandra Ghosh, the principal of the college.

The college authorities said it was thought of as an experiment being implemented in a few departments. If the teachers’ council are unable to decide on the issue, the higher education department will take a decision.

On why departments like Sociology and Statistics, which earlier supported doing away with admission tests now did an about-turn, the authorities said they were undecided and have now decided to follow the majority decision.

“You have to look at the overall academic atmosphere on why students are shying away from science education, the experiment of doing away with admission test might be reconsidered after one or two years,” said an official.

The Independents’ Consolidation, which has a majority in the students union, is, however, vehemently opposed to the move.

“The policy of taking admission tests in all 17 departments has been appreciated by the NAAC. Why the teachers’ council has changed its stance is beyond our understanding,” said an official note released by the students union.

“The authorities have come up with no proper rationale of doing away with admission tests this year in Bengali and Maths departments,” said Abhijit Sarkar, general secretary of the students union.
