Kolkata, March 26 The Parks and Square department of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has made uniforms compulsory for workers at parking lots in the city. Sources said that about 80 per cent of the parking lot workers would receive the sky-blue colour pants and deep blue full sleeve shirts from the KMC on Thursday.

“The staffers will have to wear the uniform from Thursday. Along with the uniform, the workers will also have to display identity cards showing the registration number of the concerned parking lot. If any worker is spotted without the uniform during his duty hours, he will be penalised,” said Faiyaz Ahmed Khan, member mayor in council of the Parks and Square.

The city parking lots have become a nuisance for city residents. The workers at the parking lots reportedly over-charge, mishandle cars and deny documents to the customers.

According to municipal laws, the fee charged for parking a four-wheeler is Rs 10 per hour. During night, the fee is reduced to Rs 5. However, most commuters are forced to shell out about Rs 15 per hour. The commuters are also not provided with documents or bills, after payment. The uniform scheme will provide KMC and Kolkata police an opportunity to bring the parking lot workers under the scanner.

The KMC had taken the decision to provide uniforms to the workers of the parking lots a year ago. However, it was unable top take action due to stiff resistance by the owners of the parking lots.

The KMC has been unable to end the monopoly of the owners of the parking lots. Many of the owners have not paid taxes worth more than Rs 86 lakh.
