“Rates for supply of filtered water for domestic purposes will be finalised and they will come into effect within the next two months. We will take around three years to complete installation of water meters in all households of the city,” Bhattcharya said.
The service charge will vary in accordance with ferrule size of the water pipe. At present, the KMC offers water supply to 2,68,000 households.
The introduction of the water service charge is likely to generate an additional revenue of Rs 2.5 crore.
Another reason for the announcement is the pressure on the KMC by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), say municipal officers of the department. According to ADB guidelines, for installation of water meters, collecting water charges is mandatory.
“To bear the maintenance cost partly, a service charge will be levied in different stages simultaneously. Finally, on the basis of usage of water computed by the meters, the service charge will be paid. But before that, a portion of the service charge will be recovered through the practice prevalent till 2002 for the time being,” the mayor said.
