In the next two weeks, KMC inspectors will raid 14 defaulters. The civic body aims to collect Rs 10 crore by the end of the financial year through the drive.
Instead of sending notices, KMC inspectors will now raid residences or warehouses of the defaulters for collecting money.
The KMC’s assessment department will implement Section 221 A(1) of Calcutta Municipal Corporation Act, 1980 to collect the pending money.
“The list of defaulters is a long one. It also includes a few government agencies. One of the defaulters is a housing complex of the State Bank of India in Dhakuria. The bank owes Rs 2 crore to us,” said the chief manager of the department.
The civic body has failed to collect the huge amount of pending taxes for quite some time now.
“The pending taxes amount to over Rs 300 crore. Most of it is related to commercial taxes,” said Aniruddha Mukherjee, the chief manager of KMC’s revenue department.
