He replaces A K Nigam, who now takes charge as the DDA vice-chairman. Nigam, a ’74-batch IAS officer, served as the MCD commissioner for more than two years — at a tough time when sealing and demolition issues rocked the Capital.
Mehra was Additional Commissioner (Education and Health) at the beginning of the millennium and has also served in Lakshadweep and in various positions in Delhi.
A surprise candidate, Mehra’s name cropped up only late last week — the Delhi government had sent an official recommendation for his nomination.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was seen as backing DJB chief Arun Mathur for the post, while the BJP-led MCD was rooting for R Chandramohan, secretary to the L-G, sources said.
