Kolkata, May 29 CBSE CLASS X RESULTS: Small town students script success, only three of the top 10 students are from Kolkata

As the Class X results of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was announced on Thursday, the city was surprised to see that only three of the top 10 students belonged to Kolkata and instead it was the triumph scripted by students of small towns in the state. (See box)

Another highlight of this year’s results was the shining performance by the Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across the states, which have outperformed other schools.

The teachers of the Kendriya Vidyalaya at IIT Kharagpur rejoiced after 27 of their students scored more than 90 per cent. Besides, the two toppers in the state — Anindita Bose and Debapriya Roy—are also the students of this school.

From the 51 schools under the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in the Kolkata region, 4,410 students had appeared for the examinations, of which 4,231 students were declared pass, thereby helping the KVs to secure a pass percentage of 95.94.

“Although the pass percentage in the Kendriya Vidyalayas has dipped by 0.1 per cent, the qualitative results have improved considerably,” said Sandhya Rastogi, assistant commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Kolkata Region.

The results of the Allahabad region, under which the state falls, have, however, remained stagnant at 89.10 per cent with a marginal 0.1 per cent increase as compared to last year. (See the adjoining story)

Anindita Bose, who topped the exams by scoring 485 marks out of 500 (97 per cent), said, “I did not take any private tuitions. I was solely dependent on my school.”

Sruti Biswal, a student of the same school, has scored 483 marks. She also gave the credit to her schoolteachers for guiding them to success.

The only consolation for the schools in Kolkata was that the students did not fare badly. They just could not match the performance of the KV students.

Of the 200 students who appeared from Birla High School for Boys, 197 secured first division and 32 students scored above 90 per cent marks.

All the 47 students of Birla High School for Girls got first division marks and more than 10 students scored above 90 per cent.
