Allahabad, September 27: Voicing concern over the increasing involvement of qualified youths in terrorism, former president A P J Abdul Kalam has said that the worrying trend underscores the need for imparting value-based education.

"This (involvement of highly qualified young people in terrorist activities) is a matter of great concern. It proves that our education system, though excellent in equipping people with skills, needs to focus more on inculcating values. This also points out that moral science is as much relevant as other branches of science," he said during an interaction at the Indian Institute of Information Technology in Allahabad on Friday night.

The "missile man" was replying to a query from a young student who asked why people with degrees in engineering and other professional skills were getting involved in terrorism and other types of crime.

A devout Muslim and also known to be a great admirer of the Bhagvad Gita, Kalam stressed on the "unifying role of religion and spirituality".

"Every religion has two aspects - theology and spirituality. The former is usually exclusive and often makes co-existence of people with divergent views difficult. But the latter is all-inclusive as spirituality is all about finding harmony in a life beset with turbulence.

Hence, to bring peace and harmony in society we need to drive our youth towards the spiritual traditions of religions," Kalam said.

Kalam also recounted the imposition of President's rule in Bihar and the Office of Profit controversy as the two most challenging phases of his Presidential tenure.

"But despite the challenges, I was never unhappy with the assignment. This is my advice to the young ones - try to love the job at hand and you shall always remain happy".

Congress(arjun) try to feed unother hot stuff to media and people, so other one(blasts investigation) get dilute, so investigation link breaks and nothing come out of it and they are out of wood!.

Kalam concerned by Pran on 27 Sep 2008

As long as young and educated Muslims are under the clutches of Moullas and Maulovies and cancer of reservation which deprive them in getting suitable opening are there ,then chances of misguidance are more. But the Muslims vote only those who do not want their progress in any field but a phobia of Hinduism.

Sir Your Grater than any one else! by C.Ravindranathan on 27 Sep 2008

Sir your grate! all Indians know that truth but our political leaders need not want such a man as President of India.Teach what is necessity of the peace and harmony in the nation from the childhood than they will not become terrorist they love their country and their friends more than their religion and cast.

Muslims by Jai Khosla on 27 Sep 2008

Muslims get a bad rap because they are perceived as a people who do not keep their word. They promised us that they would go to Pakistan after Partition. They did not and the Nehru Liaqat Pact made it even more difficult for them to go to Pyara Pakistan. Kalam should help get the Pact revoked so that Muslims can become one with the ummah in Pyara Pakistan. Then terror will become non-existent in India.

Great Mr.Kalam is one of the rare muslim leaders by Indi on 27 Sep 2008

Great Mr.Kalam is one of the rare muslim leaders who is loyal to India and values human life. Perhaps that is the reason why united pro terrorists alliance did not want him to be President of India. Infact united pro terrorists alliance parties and politicans are anti Indians to the hilt. We do not need leaders like PM for muslims, oldest model shivraj patil, simivadi party leader mullah mulayam, rastriya terrorist dal president mullah laloo and of course chinese servants commies. We need leaders like Kalam who is loyal to India and values human life. For united pro terrorists alliance, only muslims are valuable. The more dangerous trend among upa is they are openly supporting terrorists and terrorism and protecting terrorists like afzal. HRD minister mullah singh does not find fault in JMU protecting there terrorists students. It is high time, Hindus and muslims who are loyal to India should kick this united pro terrorists alliance out of power and save India for future generation.

But our Govt is not by Indian on 27 Sep 2008

The decision of Jamia Milia’s VC Mushirul Hasan is unfortunate as public funds would be used to defend someone booked for terrorism. There is no provision under the funding rules promulgated by the UGC under which a university/college can defend an employee or student booked for a criminal act. His claim, that the university being an autonomous body was well within its rights to take decisions on such matters, has to be be questioned. It is also shocking and painfult to note our HRD minister comes to his defence.
