The term of Parliament members could be increased to six years from the current five years with the MPs spending one year in a prestigious management institutions, Kalam told the students and teachers of Wharton School which had organised a meet on India yesterday.
Currently, the politicians are too much party-centric, he pointed out, adding that in new circumstances, it is necessary that they know best management practices to run the country.
Maintaining his strong support for the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, Kalam said India has to go in for nuclear energy in a big way to meet its fast growing developmental needs.
He said as a scientist, he must support the deal as India lacks uranium resources, while simultaneously calling for intensive research to use thorium as nuclear fuel.
Noting that India has abundance of thorium, he said it is essential that it carries out an intensive research to use the non-fissile material for maximizing its utilisation and generating power. But he said it would take 5 to 10 years for research to fructify and hence he supported the nuclear deal.
The mix for energy independence, he said, envisages use of four routes -- Hydel plus Thermal till coal availability, Solar power using high efficiency CNT based SPV cells, and Thorium- based nuclear reactors and bio-fuel for transportation sector.
India, Kalam said, needs to embark on agro-processing aggressively as it has to increase production to 340 million tonnes of food grains from the existing 200 million tones with reduced land availability(170 million to 100 million hectares) and reduced water availability by 2020.

We can not improve the political status of our country until
How do we improve the quality of MPs getting elected? How do we reduce the rift of different kinds such as regionalism, vote-bank politics, religion? How do we improve on integrity of individual? which education will help for this?
lallu has been made honorary professor by IIM-A
IIMS also teaches them how to make 500 crores from 5lacks invested in politiccs in 5 years.politics is a business for our MPS.Kalam sir is greately confused about our mps.do lallu require management course.
most of the so called shameless MPS keep sleeping duriding parliment proceedings.u can imagine what they do in IIMS
Our president is an intellect. Often intellectuals think others are just like them. I can understand his motive and it is a very smart suggestion. But the fact is that politicians who get elected are not motivated to take care of the nation not even their constituency. You can study each and every MP or MLA, what was the wealth before they got elected and the wealth at the end of their term. Most of them would have made millions of dollars. I do not think it will be of any use teaching them to manage. If we did that you will see most of the MPs party worker or his or her secretary will be attending the class. I do not think things are going to change over night. Down the road when our whole society changes then there will be a better parliament till then we have to live with this bitter one filled with Laloos and gundas and criminals. The best way to have better MPs in the parliament would be right after the election to transplant their brain with a dead man who lived a honest life.
Why the tax payers need to foot the bill for the MPs to become management-literate ? Why not the parties field only 'qualified' people ? Regarding the comment on the nuclear deal with the US as it stands, the only catch is that it may not allow India to take up the Thorium path at all, jeopardising its self sufficiency at a later time. Instead, a better option will be to come up with conducive policies and appropriate insentives to all who can afford to install solar panels. This can be complemented with generation from thermal plants using liquified coal, hydel, nuclear plants without any strings attached, etc for which teh country has all teh resources an dtechnology. It should be able to manage 10 - 15 years in that way that is envisaged to fruityfy the Thorium path.
He is also absolutely right. This MPs are getting so much salary. Also, I suggest for a constitutional amendment to sack those MPs who are in Jail like Sabbuddin, soem Jadavs etc. Indain onstitution when prepared, didn't anticipate that parliament will be full of criminals. I think ordinary Indian does not get government postion if they have criminal record. How could these MPs are still retaining their position. They even vote for presidential election.
