New Delhi, October 13: Seeking to deflect attention from Bajrang Dal which has been accused for attacks on Christians, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday said the recent incidents of violence were a manifestation of the "conflict of interest" between Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Speaking at the National Integration Council (NIC) meeting in New Delhi, he sought to project a rosy picture of Orissa in terms of communal harmony even while acknowledging the "disturbances in some pockets" of the state from "time to time", for which he blamed "ethnic strains, particularly among ST and SC communities".

Referring to the two incidents of communal violence in Kandhamal, he said there were clashes between members of SC and ST communities in the past "on account of conflict of interest in the matter of land rights, employment opportunities and religion".

"The recent incidents of violence in Kandhamal are a manifestation of such discord," he said about the district where STs constitute 53 per cent of the population and SCs constitute 22 per cent.

This comment assumes significance as the violence against Christians and Churches has been blamed on Bajrang Dal, prompting demands for banning the Sangh Parivar outfit.

Patnaik insisted that the situation in Kandhamal has been brought under control and a "gamut" of measures initiated to facilitate "harmonious and speedier" socio-economic development of different communities living in the district. He said a Special Administrator of the rank of a Commissioner has been appointed in the district to oversee the development of the area. The administrator has been given powers to settle long-standing issues over land rights.

SC/ST rift by J.A.Ragan on 21 Oct 2008

Orissa CM is right. The SC/ST conflict of intrest should be viewed seriously. It was a constitutional mistake to club these caregories together. The constitution should be amended to separate these two downtrodden sections of society into Dalits and Adivasis.dalits have been getting good attention at national level with leaders like Mayavathi, but Adivasis need their own political icons and leaders who will fight for their welfare. I am neither a SC nor a ST.

Kandhamal violence sign of SC-ST rift: Orissa CM by gopajoshi on 14 Oct 2008

Orissa C.M's. denial that violence against Christians is engineered by Bajrang Dal belies his earlier claims about his secular credentials. He might have secular bones but his whole body and mind is communal. His statement explains his inaction. This also shows his bias against the SCs and the STs.Tension between these communities must be brewing for quite some time. Why did not his government take steps to mitigate these disparities. One fails to understand why he did not contain the ethenic violence between the SCs and the STs in time. The CM has infact admiteed his failure. Because clashes between the SCs and the STs due to disparity in land holding and employment exposes government's distorted development policies. This also shows governments insensitivity towards poor marginalized people. It is the marginalized people who are victims of all kinds of castist, and communal violence. Among them also the women and children are worst sufferers.

The rift is between Bajangdal extremists and overzealous christian missionaries.

Killer Legacy continues by Jay on 14 Oct 2008

In Orissa, Christian fundamentalists and Maoist killed Swami Lakshmananand, because he was standing up for the rights of poor people terrorized by missionaries. The used every trick in the book to convert the innocent Hindus. It only goes on to show their intrinsic intolerant behaviour. As Mahatma Gandhi said long ago, if god wanted everyone to be a Christian, there wouldn't be other religions. Gandhi also said the trouble with Christianity is that it wants the neoconverts to become anti-India, and decry their cultural heritage. The Roman Catholic Church believes that anyone who doesn't believe in Jesus would not attain salvation. What a shame? It wants to perpetuate the myth of false gods without lending itself to scrutiny of scientific evidence. How can one forget what the Vatican did in the medieval ages. selling the letters of indulgences, killing women in the name of witchcraft. The mindset hasn't changed even in the 21st century.Killer Christians existed before Bajrang Dal.

Coalition Dharma by Satish Haldankar on 13 Oct 2008

Yes, i agree, he is protecting the RSS/BJP and who not, to remain in power. His talk of being a secular to every bone in his body is not borne out by his actions or rather lack of stringent action that he should have taken against the Bajrang Dal.

Poor Satish by Jay on 14 Oct 2008

Dear Satish,You like to fall for the media line about blaming the Hindus for every ill in this country. Don't you? I wonder if you show a similar stridency towards Muslims terrorists who have engaged in ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir. Why all neo converts hate Hindus and Hindustan? It's your inferiority complex?Grow up, man!

VIOLENCE ON INDIANS by tphariprasad on 13 Oct 2008

Sir,I am surprised at many of my country men, especially the journalists, trying to project all incidents of violence, in terms of communal clashes, or coloured with religious overtones. The most striking feature of all these issues are the certainty with which the reporters make suggestions as to who is responsible for the violence. I recollect the restarint by the American media in reporting about the WTO attack, and their maturity in handling such issues. Why is it that, some commoners like me feel the bias in each and every report of such nature?Till today, the actual incidents that happened in Orissa and Karnataka remains foggy, due to an effort to make it so. Can some professional journalist kindly enlighten the incidents leading to the murder of an 86 year old swami, alongwith some of his followers, and the subsequent incidents?

orissa C.M's speach by S.Ramamuarthi on 13 Oct 2008

Orissa cm has given the cause for the unresst there. In India minority appeasement is a fashion and all unscrupless politicians and media jump readily into that band wagan. Can the christian missionaries indulge in such acts as they do here in any muslim countries? Our liberal and tolerant attituede has embolden them to indulge in dubious conversion and still plead to be a victim. The vote bank politicians and the pesudo secularities are responsible for the present violent reacctions to the allurement conversions.

Give protection to the people not the culprits by Johney on 13 Oct 2008

By the reports of leading news papers and the visuals from the media it is clear that the Chief Minister does not know what has happened in his state. He is trying to protect the culprits and he has succeded in giving protection to them but not the poor affected people. Even the police had to set-up the police station in a school. Now as a CM can he guarantee protection to the poor people at least for the future?

For Biju by ilarum on 13 Oct 2008

Yes. The CM is correct. Most of the SCs are converted in to Christianity where as most STs are still remains in Hinduisam. Most of the ST leaders are affliated with the BJP and its affliated organisations. Because of them, a non entity political party,BJP in orissa till 1985, have penetrated into STs, and won many MLA and MP seats as well. Do you think without any service, the traditionally supporters of congress, are turned to BJP?

Orissa by Capt Prashanth Basavaraj on 13 Oct 2008

Would someone sensible and with a little commonsense tell Mr. Naveen Patnaik, the Hon Chief Minister to shut up and think twice, oops, ten times before he opens his mouth and shoots himself? An idiot told that the World is flat. Its his inability to protect the lives and property of innocent people and he now finds a reson to blame people who cant raise their voice!Hon. Prime Minister, Are you listening??? or sleeping? Zzzzzzzz

Kandhamal Vilolance by Kamal Shah on 13 Oct 2008

The Chief minister is economical with facts. He is trying to protect his communal allies.

Bajrang Dal by Pappu Mohanthy on 13 Oct 2008

Politicians always tell fairy tales. Bajrang Dal is behind all the violence in Orissa and the BJP is indirectly supporting them.

bajrang dal by rk on 13 Oct 2008
