Kaneria, who has been Pakistan's most potent bowler in the last few years and has taken over 200 wickets in his 45 matches, struggled on the recent tour of India and against South Africa at home failing to get the number of wickets he is expected to do every time he bowls.
The national selection committee headed by Salahuddin Ahmed feels it was not happy with Kaneria's form and that he had become too defensive after playing county cricket for the last three years.
He has been asked to report to the director of the National cricket academy, Mudassar Nazar in Lahore where a specialisation camp for spinners and wicketkeepers is being held from January 24 for two weeks.
The spinners camp will be supervised by former Test leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed while former captain Rashid Latif has been given the task of scouting out new keeper.
Kaneria apparently is unhappy at the move considering his experience and performances but a national selector insisted it was good for the leg-spinner to go back to the basics.
"He has lost the confidence to flight the ball consistently and he is conceding too many runs. He needs to lift his bowling," he said.
Mushtaq Ahmed felt Kaneria had nothing to worry about.
"He is going to remain our main bowler for the next couple of years and he is a good bowler no doubt that. But if I can help him with a few tips it will only benefit him in the long run."
Mushtaq said Pakistan's next Test series was against Australia and Kaneria would benefit from attending the camp and discussing his preparing his strategy for the series with senior bowlers like himself and Intikhab Alam.
Besides Kaneria, the other spinners invited to the camp include promising young leggie Yasir Shah, who played this week in a four-day tour match against Zimbabwe and Test left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman, Tahir Khan, Saeed Ajmal, Azam Hussain, Dilwawar Khan, Irfan-ud-din, Muhammad Aslam, Zohaib Khan, Nayyar Abbas and Aimal Khan all of whom are playing domestic cricket.
