“After ‘Jab We Met’, she has been seen in films like ‘Kambakkht Ishq’, ‘Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna’, ‘Kurbaan’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘We Are Family’, ‘Golmaal 3’, ‘Bodyguard’ and ‘RA.One’. However, except for a couple of films, she has largely played a relatively serious character. She realises that audience has been rooting to see Geet all over again and that's something which she would bring on display all over again as Raina Braganza in ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’.”
In this Karan Johar production, Kareena plays a quick-witted hairstylist who comes across a rather serious architect (Imran Khan) and gets married to him on a drunken night.
Says Karan, “Geet's background was very different, she was an earthy Punjabi girl whereas Raina is a catholic Mumbai girl who is settled in Las Vegas. The background makes a difference to the characterisation. Still, when you do talk about similarities then well just like Geet, Raina too is impulsive, quirky, talkative and a free minded soul. Of course she has her own traits but yes, it is a very crowd friendly role.”
On the other hand, first time director Shakun Batra places the reference point a little differently. He says, “See, the fact is that Geet has become such a popular character over the years, it has become a symbol for everything which is happy go lucky. Since Raina is one such person, there are bound to be comparisons. Having said that, what Imtiaz Ali did in the film for Geet has become a benchmark. Kareena and I were very conscious of that and have worked upon the dialogues and it's delivery to bring our own touch so that there is certain newness to it.”
Kareena is calling her characterisation and the film 'different though'. She says, “I have been doing all 'desi' films of late so it's a change for me as an actor. You can't expect me to continue doing massy song and dance roles all the time, right?”
