Karuna does it again, flays Hindus for sporting tilaks

Chennai, November 5: Flaying the Hindu practice of smearing ash or saffron or sporting a 'tilak' on the forehead for yet another time, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi questioned the need for ‘such things in a country which preached equality of all religions’.

Karunanidhi also questioned the rationale behind Brahmins wearing sacred thread.

"What is the need for these things in a country that has accepted all religions and preached equality of the same," he asked in a poem penned by him in the wake of caste-related violence in Madurai on Tuesday in which one person was killed in police firing.

He had on earlier occasions also ridiculed the practice of smearing ash or saffron on the forehead.

The DMK chief had made similar remarks on certain other Hindu customs earlier and described Hindus as ‘robbers’.

But later he clarified that he meant Hindus were robbers ‘who stole hearts’.

In the height of the Sethusamudram controversy, he had described Lord Ram as a ‘drunkard’ and wondered whether he was a qualified engineer to have built the Ramasethu.

In the poem, Karunanidhi described truth as God, adding that all people were equal before God and described as ‘ignorance’ those who were not aware of it.

"Caste differences are the offshoot of the branches called differences based on religion. Let’s chop off not only the branches but also uproot the tree to witness the emergence of a beautiful concept called equality," he said.

He also described as useless the face-off between believers and non-believers on the concept of God and said there was no point fighting over which faith was supreme.

Karunanidhi Mind your Business.

JUST DO IT by jayakrishnan on 29 Jan 2009

Hindus sporting tilaks,Sikhs wearing turbans,Muslims with beards and caps, christians wearing the cross, some devoted to god, some opposed to another's god, some opposed to even the concept of god, some bent on imposing their god, some ready to kill or be killed in the name of god.The believers clinging to their gods.Does God protect Man or Man protect God?Or do we need to protect Man from (another man's)God.Man imposing their idea of god's existence or absence upon another. To all I say if you really enjoy doing it, if it really makes you happy, gives you a sense of fulfillment, if you have nothing better to do, DO IT!!!

M. Karunanidi's flays by cp mony on 24 Jan 2009

Being a responsible person of a state he is supposed not to. While he talks about equality among all religion, his words create more splits and hatreds among religions. This is the way almost all Indian politicians are playing in these days just to secure political positions and gain enormous wealth for himself or his relatives indirectly. In short I will say the politicians are arogans and they do not have any sympathy on humanitarian except power hungry.

Where is equality for Hindus by venkat on 22 Nov 2008

I ask all my dear readers to read and think. Where is protection for Hindus? Where is equality for Hindus in India? In our country, we practice religious equality but on whose tolerance? When some thing goes against Muslims or Christians, whole world cries foul and our beloved leaders bow to them and curb the Hindus. But, if something happens to Hindus in the world, we cannot say anything about that because, ours is a secular Country. Our Indian practices (Hinduism, as said by foreigners) never asks some one to spread its religion. When we do not have any mechanism or head to do this, how can we protect ourself from Islam or Christianity, which are proselatarian. How Governments (also communists, in particular) think that we are equal to them. We do not have any weapons to protect our religion. Communists and Governments are cutting even the hands also. But, other people are attacking with swords. So, all Indians should now rise and protect their practices (Hinduism)

Karuna the cunning Fox by Ganesh on 13 Nov 2008

Does he has the guts to ask Muslims why are they having beard and hat? Can he ask Christians about their religious faiths?. He thinks he is secular by being anti-hindu. His days are numbered and his athesim is also numbered. He never visits temple or hindu religious acitivites but goes to Eid Fast breaks by muslims. What a shame on him? People of TN are no more fools to listen to him, everyone has access to news so they know all his drama. I would have accepted his saying why is the need for religious customs without hurting hindu sentiments. He should make his statements generic rather than pointing to a religion. All poll gimmicks to get Muslim and Christian votes. All hindus rise up and vote against this guy and his party in next election.

Karuna does it again, by N.V.SANKARAN on 08 Nov 2008

Hinduism does not need enemies from other religions to destroy it because people Karunanidhi and the communists who are born as Hindus(by mistake) are doing an excellent job of it and there are other "Hindus" who follow them

Karunanidhi by Atma Gandhi on 07 Nov 2008

Karunanidhi is forgetting that Every citizen of India has a Fundamental Right to practice Religeon of his choice and applying Tilak is a custom while performing Puja nd thereafter. By questioning it, he is interfering in Rights of Citizens and must be prosecuted.

Karunanidhi has Nidhi and No Karuna! by Balu Toronto on 06 Nov 2008

Is this coward have guts to ask, is it necessary for muslims to sport cap when prayin? This fellow being a Hindu following muslim policy thus keeping 2 wifes. is it correct and moral/ Why is he following immoral life?

HINDU SYMBOLS FLAYING by RADHIK HAIRAM on 06 Nov 2008

ASTONISHING ABSURD THAT A CM OF STATE SHOULD AIR VIEWS AGAINST RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS OF THE MAJORIRITY RELIGION- CAN BE ATHEIST, NO PROLEM, BUT TO FLAY PRACTICES POPULAR IS VERY UNKIND AND SHOWS LACK OF PROPRIETY; WHY IS HE SILENT OABOUT THE CROSS OF XIANS, HEADWEAR OF MUSLIMS, CARE NOT TALK OF THEM; WILL BE TARGETED BY THE TERRORISTS SURE; ONLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MOST TOLERANT SECT AND ABUSE ATTACK; PITY GOD ALONE CAN TEACH HIM A LESSON , WE PRAY

The Darkest hour has come and is staring but his glasses prevent him from seeing it by VS on 06 Nov 2008

MK needs to remove his glasses to see the world . His so called thinking is as dark as the glass he wears. As many of you suggested he might even try and convince his wife and daughters to wear a white saree and remove their tilak. So don't be surprised

MK flays again by vijay krish on 06 Nov 2008

It would be interesting if Karunanidhi preaches the same thing to sikhs (to get rid of their turban beard), Muslims (rid the cap beard) and Christians (rid the cross than hangs from a chain) ! After all equality means all have to get rid of their personal religious overhangs !

karuna z right by bikram on 06 Nov 2008

let me tell me you all dat karuna z right, hindus were saved by sikhs from mugals and britishers but wat they did wid sikhs , they distroyed their akal thakt, genocide at delhi, distorting their great history .if hindus r celebrating independence day just becoz of brave and peace loving sikhs

Stop spreading lies by Raman kumar on 06 Nov 2008

Hindus didn't do any genocide on Sikhs. Don't distort the history and divide the people. It was congress and its party workers who did it. You can't blame the whole community for that. Hindus in fact protected Sikhs during that time by giving them shelter in their homes.

Spreading lies by Anant on 08 Nov 2008

Raman Kumar don't forget that congress men are Hindus too. Not many muslims or Sikhs are in congress.

We need reform in Hinduism... by Ramdas on 06 Nov 2008

I am not from Tamilnadu and I stay away from political bickerings of Tamil political leaders. I fully agree with Mr Karunanidhi's views on sacred thread, smearing of ash on forehead etc. These are symbols which have divided our Hindu society into low and high castes for centuries. It is a shame that some of us still hang on to these explicit symbols of division and discrimination which have been justified by religion. What is needed is reform and not throwing the baby with the bath water. We need reform in Hindu religion. Can you believe that some of our Hindu brothers and sisters cannot enter the temple even after 60 years of India gaining independence? I appreciate the critique of Mr Karunanidhi. We need to build a society, a religion where all feel accepted. Hinduism should become a religion where all feel included and none excluded. Let us work for such a society. Most of the comments are spewing venom against Mr Karunanidhi. He is telling the truth and truth is bitter!!!

religion is value of ethoes and beliefs by subodh on 30 Jan 2009

its amusing to read the opinions. little knowledge or half knowledge is always detrimental. there are different customs, trditions and approaches of identifying with one's religion and why one should raise questions for HINDUS just becoz its the most TOLERANT society where even non-believers (nastiks)are also treated as equals with believers unlike treatment meted out to 'kafirs' and non conservationists in other religion.if u talk of equality..then put all religions on one pedestal and then evaluate. PLEASE SIMPLY REFRAIN FROM CONDEMNING. INSULTING AND TARNISHING HINDUS.. plllllse

Karuna the selfish by KUMAR on 06 Nov 2008

This mans only aim is to be in power by hook or crook and he and his family members make money when Dr M.G.R was alive this man could not wag his tail as Dr M.G.R had this man in control he will stoop to any level for money and power It is a curse that such a person is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. People can remember the drama he did recently in the Srilankan tamil issue.selfish man on earth.God has to save the people of T.N from these type of people. People will also remember the drama he created whe Dr M.G.R was alive during the 1984 assembly election in Tamil Nadu .The people at that time taught him a good lesson for his dirty political dramas. Now also he will be taught a lesson by the people the days are not far off.wait and see

Karuna does it again, flays Hindus for sporting tilaks by Thiru on 06 Nov 2008

Does he have the guts to criticise Muslims and christians also for following similar belief unique to thier religion. MK is a hypocrate and should be taught a lesson by the Hindus in the coming election. Ask him to practice his preaching at home first and ask his daughters and wives to stop wearing Tilak if he has any sense.

Karuna does it again, flays Hindus for sporting tilaks by Bhujangadev Tumuluri on 08 Nov 2008

Karunanidhi is another selfappointed fellow, who feels at liberty to criticise the Hindus and their beliefs, be cause Hindus are tolerant and devout. They bask under the liberty given by Hinduism to mock at Hindu habits and beliefs. Each relegion has its own customs and habits, and can He dare to criticise other religions?

God save country from such leaders by Saurabh on 06 Nov 2008

Karunanidhi is the best example of the dirty politician in our country. I as an Indian feel ashamed that we have such leaders that to chosen by public (god knows how his followers feel happy from such statements). He should be charged under crimnal acts for his statements and beside this one would like to know wat his political partners like congress think about his statement.

Karruna is a 'fake' blind person by ramesh kumar on 06 Nov 2008

People want to see his 'eyes'. Why is he wearing this dirty glass all the time? He is a 'fake' character, and accusing others.

Dont try to see his eyes, they are hawkish, debauchery and greedy eyes!

MK the fool by Ram on 06 Nov 2008

Mk the fool has again opened his mouth.Once people are beyond 75 they should adopt Maun vrata.MK is already walking towards the maker and he wants to stir hatred and anger in the country so that he is ever remembered by posterity-like Ravana.

Karunas is a Thamasha by KVSKumar on 06 Nov 2008

Karuna seems to be a living example of sense having given way to hate and frenzy and having become irretrievably hysterical. One can understand if he is propounding the theory of equity and justice for all citizens. Let a Hindu smear ash from burnt wood, corpse or any matter on his body and forehead or for that matter a Brahmin wear cotton thread sacred or saline with sweat. The problem arises when these symbols are denied to others based on their birth. Karuna is free to smear ash all over his body or learn Vedas, puja vidhis and subject himself to initiation. He can also set up institutions providing vedic education to all, irrespective of his / her caste, creed or race and then perform the upanayana (initiation or thread ceremony) on the pass outs and call them as true Brahmins. This way he can ridicule those who calim that being ‘brahmin’ is a right reserved only for them at birth. It is a fact that Hinduism as practiced today contains a high doze of brahminism.

Karunanidhi the insane by KUMAR on 06 Nov 2008

This man has gone out of his senses because of his age why is that he is sporting in a yellow colour shawl always there are other colours also he can change to some other colour? why does he wear a ring on his right hand with a stone in it ?He cant give a proper explanation for all these He will write poems and do drama like the drama he along with his party M.P s did for the Sri Lankan Tamil problem .People are not fools they will teach him a lesson in the next election .Wait and see.

HYPOCRISY IN ATHEISM BY PREACHER KARUNANIDHI by A.S.RAVI on 06 Nov 2008

Let the so called rationlist thinker come out and speak about atheism in general, rather than targeting Hindu gods/customs and rituals . He can exercise his freedom to speak out the customs in other religions and face the consequences. History of TN has not witnessed such hypocrisy in our times . Hindu Gods are saving him , because he is speaking against them and their rituals/customs , which is the essence of our Universally Tolerant Religion .

yello karunanidhi by v.ganessan on 06 Nov 2008
