Karuna does it again, flays Hindus for sporting tilaks

Chennai, November 5: Flaying the Hindu practice of smearing ash or saffron or sporting a 'tilak' on the forehead for yet another time, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi questioned the need for ‘such things in a country which preached equality of all religions’.

Karunanidhi also questioned the rationale behind Brahmins wearing sacred thread.

"What is the need for these things in a country that has accepted all religions and preached equality of the same," he asked in a poem penned by him in the wake of caste-related violence in Madurai on Tuesday in which one person was killed in police firing.

He had on earlier occasions also ridiculed the practice of smearing ash or saffron on the forehead.

The DMK chief had made similar remarks on certain other Hindu customs earlier and described Hindus as ‘robbers’.

But later he clarified that he meant Hindus were robbers ‘who stole hearts’.

In the height of the Sethusamudram controversy, he had described Lord Ram as a ‘drunkard’ and wondered whether he was a qualified engineer to have built the Ramasethu.

In the poem, Karunanidhi described truth as God, adding that all people were equal before God and described as ‘ignorance’ those who were not aware of it.

"Caste differences are the offshoot of the branches called differences based on religion. Let’s chop off not only the branches but also uproot the tree to witness the emergence of a beautiful concept called equality," he said.

He also described as useless the face-off between believers and non-believers on the concept of God and said there was no point fighting over which faith was supreme.

Karuna... Get a new life or wife!! by Renak on 06 Nov 2008

lots of followers (thank God Almighty I am not one of them), you should watch your mind/pen/tongue…. Either be a politician or a poet or better still retire or better still get a new life!!.

Karuna... Get a new life or wife!! by Renak on 06 Nov 2008

Mr.Karuna certainly seems to be in “Aralu Maralu” stage. Its time for him to concentrate on the truth (when will he give chance to youngsters) and try to make his path to nirvana instead of wasting his time in politics and creating confusion with Hindus or Rama or whatever. If you don’t want to do, you don’t do it but stop meddling with others mind!! A half mad guy can create more madness in this world than a (full) mad guy!! You have forgotten that Hindus are more tolerant than any one else in the universe, that’s why, India still survives as one nation… and you are still alive (no fatwa on your head yet!! How cool is that?) With all due respect, please mind your own business. With no qualification what so ever you still surviving as a Chief (hum), hence you have no right to question about Lord Rama’s qualification. Tomorrow don’t say all are equal in India so why bother wearing any clothes…. Hahahahahaha. I know a poets mind has no boundary…. But since you are a politician with lots

Dirty politics by veeraraghavan on 06 Nov 2008

It has become a pasttime for Politicians to humiliate Hindu majority and appease Minorities for vote bank politics. After Karuna's new thesis, will all those who apply thilak vote against his DMK in the coming election.WIll Congress distance itself from DMK atleast now, which they should have done when he commented about Lord Ram? It is a planned conspiracy to defame Hindus from every quarters using Govt machinery, to continue in power with Karuna lalu Paswan surrounded.Christian Missionaries, play a vital roll in creating chaos in the country>,It is the right time to throw karuna and lalu and the congress outof power permanently.Ofcourse the voters ar waiting for that.

hindus by yohan on 06 Nov 2008

RAMA RAMA by MASS REDDY on 06 Nov 2008

Rama Rama what happened to this Karuna. In one way he is accepting there are different religionms that exists and other way asking every one to be same. Even if we agree why not he tell others who are living in India to follow Hindu religion so that all Indians are one religion. Finally as his age creating mental imbalance it appears.

Hindu Bashing by VG on 06 Nov 2008

There is nothing wrong in penning ones opinion on religious rituals or customs but how come karuna has not dared to write to do away the turbans used by sikhs or lingis used by muslim men and hijab by muslim womena/ ais it because Hindus are tolerant or is Karuna scared of Sikh and Muslim blacklash or worried about Muslim Fatwa agaisnt him? What is it Mr. Chief Minister?

Karuna does it again, flays Hindus for sporting tilaks by GURU on 06 Nov 2008

Dear Mr. MK, then why your wife and daughters are wearing "POTTU" in their forehead and wear colour sarees, let them wear white sarres, it also a colours, Do u have courage to critisize other communities. Why you are pointing hindus only. If realy so why did u go earlier occasion on to break ramadan fast. He said for diverting people attention from price raise, family politics, power cuts, law and order, etc.

partisan crowd here by not a hindu on 06 Nov 2008

nobody is talking about castes. probably all brahmins in this form....i'm out of here.

Karuna does it again by rakesh on 06 Nov 2008

Talking about equality is very pleasing to ear but a concept not achievable. The almighty Himself has not created an 'equal' world. No two persons can be same in their mental, physical, spritual capabilities. This difference is beyond capacity of human abusing Brahmins/hindus, cursing hindus rituals will not bring any amount of equality. All efforts should be aimed in providing equal opportunity to all without any bias. Any leader of whatever stature can claim that they are working in this direction? Please do not abuse Hindus/Brahmins and center of our faith - ASTHA for all ills in society.

Senile Dementia by vikram on 06 Nov 2008

Secularism means equality of all religions. Nowhere does it imply that one abdicate his religion. This old fool is confusing aethism with secularism. Its time for him to retire and die peacefully.

karuna does it again by goggle-eyed on 06 Nov 2008

Sir, Karunanidhi's problem is that he has no intellect, but he is all clever; he lacks a conscience, but is full of ideas;he has no friends,he only has followers;he is no atrist or a poet,he plays with words and calls it poetry..something like a circus artiste posing as a gymnast. These utterings may be due to the uncomfortable coming of "The autumn of the Playgiarist"(spelling error intended) and the nation will soon see the battle among his the sibling children born out of marriages (two or three or more!!) against one another .

Ask the same to Muslim Burkha, Cap and Christian Cross by Shankar on 06 Nov 2008

Karuna wants all the citizens to be cloned so that every body looks same and there is no different among the human beings. Karuna wants the entire earth to be in plain so there will be no difference between place to place. Also i ask why only Karunanidhi wants to be Chief Minister of TN, why not all of the citizens. Why the TN Govt has different levels of post and salary in the Govt, why not the same level of post and salary to all. We know that you are converted christian and you practice christanity. But, I think on Official doccument you are still Hindu. Why dont you dare to say Muslims, wearing cap, burkha will hurt the national sentiment. Why dont you dare to say Christians long gown, or Cross Symbol Hurts the National sentiments which will divide the community from being oneness. Mr. Karunanidhi we know that you requested Sonia to stop Military operation on Sri Lankan Tamil Christians and in back Sonia had asked you to deliver a statement against Hindu. Tamilians kickout karun.

Karunanidhi's approach towards hindus by Ramesh on 06 Nov 2008

This old man is in a frustration and he has failed on all counts in Governance. He is out of sense and out of mind. Does not dare to question anybody. Fear also cripples him whether his sons / daughter will reign in power. Again has started attacking the soft targets, just to divert the attention of the people. Now lot of criticism and cry for excuse will come from "limited" quarters, because all political parties barring BJB and ADMK will not open their mouth, because if they say anything that will hurt the "secularists". But I hope after this old man, other DMK functionaries will not adopt this ideology which always hurts the Hindus. I don't know why this main is still not matured enough to accept the practices of the followers of Hindu religion. If he is an atheist, let him be we respect him. But he should try to respect the believers of religion, especially Hinduism. He respects all religions except Hinduism. Hope his idelogies will die alongwith him.

What About Secularism? by Aditya on 06 Nov 2008

What is this oaf yapping about? Are we a secular country or arent we? I dont wear a Tilak, but if I want to, why cant I? Next he will say muslims shouldnt sport beards or yammulke, Christians should wear crosses, Sikhs shouldnt wear beards or turbans. This chap should shut up. And retire. Hes senile.

HINDUS THE SUFFERERS by Raj on 06 Nov 2008

There has always been talk of Aryans and Dravidians having conflict as both are different races and faith. I have been to Chenai many times and surprisingly I found hindu temples all over. I found same idol worship in south indian temples as is done in north. Same gods are worshiped all over. The only difference i FOUND was the nomenclature. Shiva, Ram, Krishan, Goddess Dugra in various forms all are worshiped in Tamil Nadu. Sanaskrit is more beautifully song by the Southern singers than their Northern counterparts. I have a collection of Sanaskrit sholokas and other sutras beautifully song by singers of acclaim like Subhalaxmi, Balasubramanium etc., . So where is the divide. Hindus in India have been the sufferes for last two thousand years. The divide all over india has been engineered by both the external and internal elements to gain power. Our civilization and glorious past has been the victim. HINDUS FROM KASHMIR TO KANAYAKUMARI THOUGH ONE, HAVE BEEN THE SUFFERERS IN INDIA

Kalainjarin Gharjanam by Sushand on 06 Nov 2008

I think Kalainjar is right. We all should wear dark glass like him. Thilak ? Absolutely NO. Marry as many times like him. Before I close, Kalainjar, one request. Do you dare to advice other relegion to follow secularism? Just try and see what happens.

karunanidhi by PRAKASH PATEL on 06 Nov 2008

Dear Mr. Karunanidhi we all know you are the chief minister of Tamilnadu state so you might not be in need of cheapest way to become the celebrity as it is the easiest way to become a celebrity while criticizing the hindus for their customs. Being a secular nation we are duty bound by our constitution to give equal treatment to every citizen irrespective of the religion or cast to which the citizen belong. Further, we can not give a preference to the regional language also. Hence, I would like to advise Mr. Karunanidhi to do two things to bring his thought in action. First, ask the Tamil People to use national language i.e. hindi and secondly ask the muslims of the nation to be clean shaved and do not wear a “topy” which suggest their fundamentalism. As, this both things are also in conflict with fundamental principle of our constitution of Equality” and also in conflict with the thought of Mr. Karunanidhi and as such I hope he will show the same courage.

it appears that we are finally going to live in the animal farm like world. let us recall one of the rules mentioned in the bookas the pigs come to power, all animals are equal but some are more equal than others. our politicians are true representetives of the pigs in animal farm and have always enjoyed that more equal than others status and will stoop down to the lowest levels to preserve their power.alas! is hamam mey saab nangey hain. gandhi would have said heyram without godse's bullet just looking at the deeds of the present day politicians.

Crownanidhi by Arun on 06 Nov 2008

The old nut is twice married and looks like his two wives must have torn away whatever miniscule brains he would have had. Even a crow looks better than this guy.

Loosing sanity by Arun on 06 Nov 2008

Some loose their balance when they become old. This guy had lost it long back and pity the state who made him a Chief Minister. He makes these remarks to rile people, something old people try to do when they are frustrated at their age. So ignore him and lets throw him a dime for his efforts.

karuna does it again by n.natarajan on 06 Nov 2008

let Mr.Karunadhi remove his "yellow shawl" which he is sporting as a sacred thread.let his also ask his wives and daughter in laws to remove the tilak which they are putting on the forehead. He is a convinient athiest and never imposes on his family his athiesm under individual freedom.but when it comes to public life he wants to blabber about hindus and their practices whithout knowing its meaning and its sentiments.poor old man must have ran out of points to checkmate jayalalitha and his erstwhile allies PMK and Coommunists who are bashing him day in day out.hence tha latest anti hindu out burst.

Karuna does it again??? by Suresh on 06 Nov 2008

This man has become mad and criticizing Hindus. Does he have a backbone to criticize any other religion. He will not do it because he will lose the votes. Suresh

Ignorance by Sanjay Gulabani on 06 Nov 2008

1) When did Hinduism ever believe in inequality? Advaita believes in non-dual nature of consciousness, while Dwaita believes in oneness even in diversity - inequality was created by the "Divide and Rule" policy of Britishers, which has been used by politicians like Karuna to the disadvantage of India.2) Do we really have to change ourselves to get accepted and show that we are accomodating? Maybe wear a burkha when a muslim knocks on our door, and jeans and t-shirts when a christian knocks our door :)3) Do we really need to be accepted? Does acceptance mean throwing our identity away and sacrificing meaningful scientific traditional practices? 4) "Accepting all religions" and preaching "equality of all religions" is something India has always done – so why is he asking "Hindus" to stop their customs and follow others? Is that equality/freedom? 5) Has Karunanidhi converted to Christianity? If so, he better change his name as well!! Why wear a hindu mask and fool people :)
