Chennai, November 5: Flaying the Hindu practice of smearing ash or saffron or sporting a 'tilak' on the forehead for yet another time, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi questioned the need for ‘such things in a country which preached equality of all religions’.

Karunanidhi also questioned the rationale behind Brahmins wearing sacred thread.

"What is the need for these things in a country that has accepted all religions and preached equality of the same," he asked in a poem penned by him in the wake of caste-related violence in Madurai on Tuesday in which one person was killed in police firing.

He had on earlier occasions also ridiculed the practice of smearing ash or saffron on the forehead.

The DMK chief had made similar remarks on certain other Hindu customs earlier and described Hindus as ‘robbers’.

But later he clarified that he meant Hindus were robbers ‘who stole hearts’.

In the height of the Sethusamudram controversy, he had described Lord Ram as a ‘drunkard’ and wondered whether he was a qualified engineer to have built the Ramasethu.

In the poem, Karunanidhi described truth as God, adding that all people were equal before God and described as ‘ignorance’ those who were not aware of it.

"Caste differences are the offshoot of the branches called differences based on religion. Let’s chop off not only the branches but also uproot the tree to witness the emergence of a beautiful concept called equality," he said.

He also described as useless the face-off between believers and non-believers on the concept of God and said there was no point fighting over which faith was supreme.

even by his own argument, he himself should not be wearing d yellow shawl (which if i remember right was given to them by some hindu spiritual person)...what distinction he hope to achieve by wearing that?...i echo all the opinion that lot of you have sounded prior to me...even if u put holy cloth on a pig and make it a CM its still a pig!!!... but why is that the majority of people in tamilnadu don't smell his stink?

Karunanidhi does what ? by Rafio Bana on 06 Nov 2008

Blah, Blah.... These anti- karunanidhi jokers are full of venom. What is wrong by correcting the strange customs. If Karunanidhi (like the BJP) is to speak against the minorities, then he will be considered a hero and a patriot by these jokers. What a mentality?

Karunanidhi Philosophy about hindusim by SATHIYANARAYANAN S on 06 Nov 2008

This is totally rubbish. Mr. Karuna this is the time for you to retire. I have very simple question to you? Why are you always wearing a "yellow" shawl on your shoulders? Why you always worship a small " Ganesha" situated just opposite to your street before boarding your car? For you, money and power is very important than everything. My advise to you is please read "KarudaPuranam" - a tamil version is available which explains punishments for your sins.

Insulting Hinduism by Soham Yadav on 06 Nov 2008

When Norwegian cartoonist made the caricature of Mohammed, all the Indian politician and media were condemning the Norwegian cartoonist. And the same people are insulting the Hindus everyday. Some time they say Lord Ram never existed. After some protest they said, oh Ram existed but he never built Ramsethu then they changed their statement again. Then they said Rama himself destroyed the Sethu. Why plitician and media dare to insult the Hindus in our own country?????? Because they know the weeknesses of Hindu people. Most of the Hindus follow the policy of "Who Cares".Who care if the terrorist are bombing our country, who care if they arrest the Shankracharya on Diwali eve, who care if they insult the Lord Rama. That's the Hindu response.

Traitor beneath the skin...!! by BIS on 06 Nov 2008

With the elections approaching he is trying to gain some cheap attention. Going by his words i guess people in Kolkata should also start to adopt the people from Bangladesh. I dont see why shall we care for an armed terrorist outfit like LTTE. Now actually i have begun to cherish the moment when he was dragged to the streets by police at mid night. Good job by Jaya. He has got a really sick mentality.

be sensible by purushothama on 06 Nov 2008

What a senseless parody??If Karunanidhi makes a similar remark about other religions, as has been pointed out, it would have led to serious consequences by now. The guy must be happy that Hindus do not react like that. Please ask him to become a Muslim or christian if he does not like to be a Hindu. India is the only country where the majority religion is not the state religion. Let us make it BHARAT. (Mera Bharat Mahan). Jai Hind

Equality and TN- Poles apart by V Suryanarayana on 06 Nov 2008

If Karunanidhi is taking of equality, he should move a resolution in his assembly to forego the maximum reservation TN is enjoying as against the rest of the country? And also speak against the dress being worn by Muslims and Christians. Also he should take initiative for enforcement of common civil code in India.

what is the important in wearing yellow cloth by swaminathan.v on 06 Nov 2008

Let Karuna ask his family members , ministers and paty men to remove thilak from their forehead. He himself remove yellow cloth then advise others.

Karunanidhi's statement on Hindu customs by jayachandran on 06 Nov 2008

Sir, A person occupying a seat power of a state, making statements ridiculing Hindu customs, quite an unimaginable state of affairs. If this is the state of mind of the Head of a state, no wonder we have enough matchsticks enough to ignite communal clashes and caste rivalry.God save TN

Opinions by Taraka Donti on 06 Nov 2008

During the history of mankind problems arose when one group or a person wanted other to follow their doctrine. It is appaling to see that people in places of power/responsibilty didnot learn anything from history. Everyone is entitled to their personal opinions, but they are just that, "personal opinions". Those personal opinions shouldnot be made public knowing fully well how people are going to react to that. Noone asked Mr.Karunanidhi about his personal opinion. So, Mr.Karunanidhi, zip it.

Karuna is a hypocrite by ILanchezhiyan on 06 Nov 2008

LTTE members are all staunch Hindus. They dont tolerate any other religion. Why doesn't he criticize them for their religion? Why does he play his tricks only in TN?

Karnuna;s hindu tirade by Pramod Kumar on 06 Nov 2008

Hi. Karnunaji. Can u say similar things to muslim brother - not towear cap or keep daddi.

Reason for Tilak by Vishvas (Suryakant) Avachat on 06 Nov 2008

Mr. Karunanidhi, dont speak any nonsense if you dont know enough about any religion! I do respect your concept of equality but think many times befor you utter the word about other casts, for your knowledge i am giving the reason of sporting the tilak in hindus! Reason:Wearing religious marks ( also called Tilak) is a custom followed by Hindus. It mainly invokes a feeling of sanctity by the wearer and the onlookers as well. Religious marks are worn by men and women with ashes, clay, kumkum (Powdered red turmeric) or sandalwood powder. It is a visible sign of a person as belonging to Hindu culture. The Tilak is also believed to have medicinal and protective functions. The pastes applied are considered "cooling", and are applied to the ajna chakra, a concentration of spiritual energy on the forehead between the eyebrows. The Tilak is also considered to bestow spiritual comfort and protection against demons, bad luck, and other evil forces. From: Viswas Avachat, Patas, Pune.

karuna does again by mani on 06 Nov 2008

Let me see if he has the courage to critisize muslims wearing purda, men grow bear as their religious belief, or sikhs wear turban or christians wear cross. we hindus are the only religion dont raise any voice against these comments. All hindus not just tamililans should demand an apology and remove him power. I challenge him to say nthe same to other religions.

Karuna's Criticism by Sid on 06 Nov 2008

As a CM he has failed to solve the Power crisis sweeping his state, to control his wayward son's activities in Southern districts of the state and has been ineffective to protect the interests of Tamils in Srilanka, so just to divert attention of people he is engaged in insane politics. He should retire now as his too old for 21 century!Sid

Karuna's comments by venkat on 06 Nov 2008

Well Mr. Karuna... can we ask you why you wear the glares and the caps like Mr. MGR did?... It's the same principle called Freedom of Expression... but then would you "a man who names his son Lenin" understand what is freedom of expression?

reply by lakshmy on 06 Nov 2008

K, if you are so bothered by Hindus wearing Tilaks on their foreheads, please ask your daughter to wipe it off her forehead. Or would it prove too painful? for it is the mark of a suhaag for every Hindu wife??? smirk smirk And like others have said, u dont have the gall to question why Muslims don the skull cap or Christians the crosses. It's admirable that you so religiously target one particular community. They must be giving you the nightmares. My suggestion- die soon. Worries will enf\d

Karuna does it again, flays Hindus for sporting tilaks by pandurang on 06 Nov 2008

karunanidhi is using the same tricks used by the DK to come to power in the 60s. DMK is very well known for its hate-brahmins attitudethe government should loose no time in arresting karunanidhi.

Ignorant MK - aethist talking about Tilak - by Ram on 06 Nov 2008

Here is an aethist, who is talking about rreligious practice. Hinduism is a scientific religion. There are many scientific reasons for wearing ash (made from cowdung) and meithi. All have proved to be medicinal value. Now MK is taking about Hinduism practice and wants to abolish the practivce in the name of equality. Can he ask his best muslim women friends not to wear black coverings?. By the by, red meithi is also worn by protestant christians. Even christians have recognised the value of tilak. High time, MK stops accusing hindus., why is that he is unable to talk against muslims or their practices?

why? by M on 06 Nov 2008

Why people keep electing these morons? People of TN should take politics seriously and stop electing these actors. This UPA government is a bunch of clowns e.g. Patil, Lallu, Karuna, Amar singh etc I mean this is the worst case scenario for any government having to deal with this jokers.

Hats Off !! by Rajesh on 06 Nov 2008

Hats Off to Karunanidhi. I was not aware we have a popular Hindu politician in South who can think beyond caset and creed. I am pleasently surprised to know his thinking. I wish we Indians get rid of such issues one day, just like US people have moved beyond racism by electing their fisrt black president.
