Chennai, November 5: Flaying the Hindu practice of smearing ash or saffron or sporting a 'tilak' on the forehead for yet another time, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi questioned the need for ‘such things in a country which preached equality of all religions’.

Karunanidhi also questioned the rationale behind Brahmins wearing sacred thread.

"What is the need for these things in a country that has accepted all religions and preached equality of the same," he asked in a poem penned by him in the wake of caste-related violence in Madurai on Tuesday in which one person was killed in police firing.

He had on earlier occasions also ridiculed the practice of smearing ash or saffron on the forehead.

The DMK chief had made similar remarks on certain other Hindu customs earlier and described Hindus as ‘robbers’.

But later he clarified that he meant Hindus were robbers ‘who stole hearts’.

In the height of the Sethusamudram controversy, he had described Lord Ram as a ‘drunkard’ and wondered whether he was a qualified engineer to have built the Ramasethu.

In the poem, Karunanidhi described truth as God, adding that all people were equal before God and described as ‘ignorance’ those who were not aware of it.

"Caste differences are the offshoot of the branches called differences based on religion. Let’s chop off not only the branches but also uproot the tree to witness the emergence of a beautiful concept called equality," he said.

He also described as useless the face-off between believers and non-believers on the concept of God and said there was no point fighting over which faith was supreme.

These days it become the trend of some people to talk against certain believs and he is the main among them. I'm not a guy against muslims. Just trying to explain Karunanithi nature. Even Cinema industry people these days praising him a lot (No one knows for what). Certainly karunanithi's is man who is there in politics for the WELFARE OF HIS FAMILY and nothng else

Hate monger No.1 by Venkat Iyengar Iyer on 06 Nov 2008

I would like Karunanidhi say this about Islam; about the beard and the skull cap. He would never say that. He is a hypocrite. He is not rational thinker like he claims. His hatered of Hindusim, has roots in his hatread of Brahmins. He hates them - simply hates them for whatever reason, like Hitler hated Jews. He attributes all the ills of lower case to Brahmins wo brought the Vedic religion to South India. It is rediculous to give so much credit to Tamil Brahmins, they never rules Tamil nadu; they are not warriors, they were living of the mercy of landlords and kings of south India, it's not their fault they had it easy and the kings sort their advice. Why blame them, they never opperessed others by the power of sword. If anything, it is the rest of the population that should have waken up. However, thank God they finally did, with the advent of people like C.N Annadurai, EVR and Kamaraj. They are not hate mongers, but Karunanidhi is one.

Karuna does it again, flays Hindus for sporting tilaks by KRV on 06 Nov 2008

Mr. KarunaNidhi is slowly but surely loosing his mental equilibrium. He is very very old age may be a factor adversely impacting his opinions on traditional practices of hundreds of millions of Hindus. He is not dumb but certainly foolish. He must stop making derogatory comments on what others do or do not do. It is unbecoming of a CM of the great State of Tamil Nadu.

That would be equal rejection of all religions Mr. Karunanidhi by Sriram Venkitachalam on 06 Nov 2008

Karunanidhi doesn't understand that acceptance of all religions doesn't mean stripping every religion of what defines it, that would be rejection of all religions. Acceptance is finding an appreciation for the diversity. His ideas remind me of communist China.

Tilak by Raghbendra Jha on 06 Nov 2008

In response I will quote from Swami Vivekananda: “The more, therefore, the Hindus study the past, the more glorious will be their future, and whoever tries to bring the past to the door of everyone, is a great benefactor to his nation. The degradation of India came not because the laws and customs of the ancients were bad, but because they were not allowed to be carried to their legitimate conclusions.” Swami Vivekananda Selections from the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, Kolkata: Advaita Ashram, 1986, pg.466“The great seers of ancient India saw so far ahead of their time that the world has to wait centuries yet to appreciate their wisdom, and it is this very inability on the part of their own descendants to appreciate the full scope of this wonderful plan, that is the one and only cause of the degradation of India.” Swami Vivekananda Selections from the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, Kolkata: Advaita Ashram, 1986, pg.466-7.

whether it be a temple or a church or a mosque, all these places are meant to mint money in the name of their own respective gods and goddesses. if karuna says about equality then he should appoint a common personel to collect all the money and use if for any social cause. The bottom line of our belief is based on money and power which goes along with religion. INDIA is well known for it.

This from a guy who wears dark glasses in the night, and has two wives, supports the LTTE, and has accumulated wealth far disproportionate to his income as a writer in the film industry. Time to run to mummy (Amma)!

Correction suggestion by Sumer Khan on 06 Nov 2008

Dr. Karuna is wrong when he says Hindus are thiefs, actually he should have mentioned Brahmins as Thieves, who have robbed non Brahmins of much needed progress in their private and public life. In fact all Hindus should have the right to wear the sacred thread just like all muslims have to right to wear caps and all Christians have the right to wear Cross. I dont think Dr. Karuna's words will be accepted by all Hindu Brothers as they have have been netted too deeply by Brahmins..

Aatheist C.M. of Tamil Nadu by Ven Parthasarathy on 06 Nov 2008

There is no point in ranting about Karunanidhi. India is a free country, a Democracy. The best reaction is for 'We the People' to show their outrage at election time. Angry epithets break no bones.

Hate Hindu campaign by Bala Sethuram on 06 Nov 2008

This lunatic was at the forefront with "Hate bramin" strategy and captured power in T.Nadu. Now needs a bigger thing for playing the Eeelam card, so has begun the "Hate Hindu" campaign. Dont be surprised if you here that all Tamils-Dravidians were atheists until the aryans came and brain washed them into senseless rituals (or) all dravidians used to wear skirts and skullcaps before the bad aryans (earlier bramins now Hindus) disposessed them of their intelligence. This is just around the corner. India has hope!!!! India needs more lunatics in power!!!!

Hinduism has real meaning by Pattabi Raman on 06 Nov 2008

Dear CM of TN, Please read "Arthamula Hindu Matham" (Meaningful Hindu Religion) by the late poet Kannathasan. Tilak and ash represent that ultimately our physical body is going to be either a piece of soil (Tilak) or cremated ash, so live peacefully, that is the meaning. Please be mature.

Karuna does it again by Jaideep on 06 Nov 2008

Mr Karunanidhi Contradicts his won statement, If all religions have been accepted and are equal then every person has the right to carry his won customs. Isnt stopping the Hindu's from wearing a tilak transgressing on their rights and a treatment of unequality. Why has it become a "Sin" to be a Hindu in India.

Why this hatered by James on 06 Nov 2008

Mister first preach such belief's within your family before poisoning innocent people for votes. I don't understand why you always targeting Brahmins because they don't retaliate. Why do have reservations in Tamil Nadu. First get rid of it and then start talking. You stupid brainless idiot stop this cheap political drama.

thoughts by thoughts on 06 Nov 2008

This is good thought! No need to display your religion in public, all sacred abulations etc doesn't make sense from a rationalist point of view..but critics are the best soaps to cleanse the system

karunanidhi has got no sense and he deserves a smack !!! get lost and go and dwell in hell bcoz thats all u deserve. join ur supporters in the bonfire of hell.let teh hindus live in peace in their own country...

karuna old fool by dsdfnfkjh on 06 Nov 2008

Let this most respectable old man go and read the constitution and understand the meaning of secular - first. Secular is just not provoking hindus all the time and bedding with muslims and bedpanning christians. First of all, for his age, he should have learnt to respect each one's right to practice his own faith. In fact the constitution bars one from forcing his faith on another and it is these pesudo-secularists who are doing all these things in India. This can happen only in India.Let Karuna be a beacon for his philosophy by removing the tilak from his wife's forehead.

Karnuanidhi's comment on Tilaks by Insulted on 06 Nov 2008

Would Mr. Karunanidhi dare say anything insulting to Christians or Muslims? It is easy to beat up Brahmins becaus ethey don't have a political party. At an age when he should be comtemplating all the pain he has caused, he is creating problems. May be at this age he can change his name to something else than Karunanidhi. This man is insane. What next? those who wear pants as opposed to Lungi?

Karunandhi by Zak on 06 Nov 2008

I agree 100 % with Karunanidhi, freedom of speech is his brith right???, Instead of arguing and telling that it is an old tradition , bring solid evidence to support your claim that Hindus are supposed to wear such things from our holy scriptures .People who call themself HIndu doesnot know what that word means, none of us read the sciptures..what Karunanidhi twas telling may be his opinion but to counter it we can't say it is age old tradition, rather go back and read authentic books and quate directly form it .
