Chennai, November 5: Flaying the Hindu practice of smearing ash or saffron or sporting a 'tilak' on the forehead for yet another time, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi questioned the need for ‘such things in a country which preached equality of all religions’.

Karunanidhi also questioned the rationale behind Brahmins wearing sacred thread.

"What is the need for these things in a country that has accepted all religions and preached equality of the same," he asked in a poem penned by him in the wake of caste-related violence in Madurai on Tuesday in which one person was killed in police firing.

He had on earlier occasions also ridiculed the practice of smearing ash or saffron on the forehead.

The DMK chief had made similar remarks on certain other Hindu customs earlier and described Hindus as ‘robbers’.

But later he clarified that he meant Hindus were robbers ‘who stole hearts’.

In the height of the Sethusamudram controversy, he had described Lord Ram as a ‘drunkard’ and wondered whether he was a qualified engineer to have built the Ramasethu.

In the poem, Karunanidhi described truth as God, adding that all people were equal before God and described as ‘ignorance’ those who were not aware of it.

"Caste differences are the offshoot of the branches called differences based on religion. Let’s chop off not only the branches but also uproot the tree to witness the emergence of a beautiful concept called equality," he said.

He also described as useless the face-off between believers and non-believers on the concept of God and said there was no point fighting over which faith was supreme.

karuna on tilak by chakkala on 06 Nov 2008

Mad politician can blabber anything about hindus. But will he dare to mention about muslims, their method of wearing a beard or a scar on their forehead, or christians carrying a cross on their neck. If he mention anything against the religious practice of other religions there would have been blood shed in TN. Hindus do not react knowing his craze but yet for him. Whereas others would have pulled his tongue out to prevent him from making any further such foolish statements. But we are burdened with such politicians whom we are tolerating and still bring them to power.

karuna by shan on 06 Nov 2008

Its time to go out for him. He always say one thing and next day he will say other way to escape. eg said robbers and then hindus hve stolen hearts.

Hypocrite and stupid Karunanidhi by B. B Goel on 06 Nov 2008

Is not this a hypocrisy that this stupid looking chap with 24x7 body-colored eye glass criticize only Hindus, does not believe in "Hinduism" (or any religion) but highly support caste based reservation? If he really believe every human being is equal, if he does not believe in religion or Hinduism, then he should abolish caste based reservation in Tamilnadu, the worst state for caste based reservation in India. Will he ever get the courage to criticize any other religion like Islam for cutting foreskin or having no mustache but beard or a Christian who wears cross and so on?

tell PM first by Antina on 06 Nov 2008

Then first tell the PM of India Dr. Manomohon sing not to wear pagdi on her head. It is a secular Country so he should not practice his sikh religion.

It is none of your business if women want to wear a bindi or not. If they like it, they will wear it. If they don't like, they won't.. Now shut your stinking mouth up.. Will you?The women of India are smart and confident enough to know what they want.

Karunanidhi.. Man of Truth! by Deva on 06 Nov 2008

Karuna...! A man to be hailed and symbol of freedom and liberty in india. of course it is sad that the system caste is ravaging India. Caste and brahmanism are inseparable. castism is propagated by certain elements of Hinduism. Is it not shame for India and every good Indian...! Can this country be a model to the world? untill now certainly not. i am proud to be an Indian and i wonder at Mr.Karunanidhi, for his courage to speak the Truth. what he is speaking is true. Look at the United States of America which has elected the first Black president (a representative of a minority 13%). can this thing happen in India? we are are also racist (caste). Today United States and Karunanidhi are inspirational figures for the oppressed in the name of religion (caste) and race. le us listen him and i believe that the Truth Hurts to the profound of a person.

hindus sporting tilak etc by canmedigovindarao on 06 Nov 2008

Religion is ones personal issue. Why such people who think that bthey are the only ones born to correct the entire hindus are freely allowed to talk in such matters. It is high time to think seriously to boycot or ban such liberties to talk on customs and faiths .These ones are not secular in real sense of the term.A country is seclar where every one has freedom of religion and faith that is his personal life, all citizens should follow one common code and constitution and should not comment or critise others`fath etc. as in usa. These persons do not bother to make the country like that but harp on the customs deities etc of others.Such activities should condemned and not heeded even.Just ignore. These type is not healthy for the good of country. Better nip it in the bud. Who are these to poke in their nose in individuals prvate fath and customs.

right but wrong too! by corematter29 on 06 Nov 2008

I completely agree to DMK Karunanidhi on removing the difference based on religion and castes , however it was stupid or unwanted of him to mention removing tilak etc. which is an individual's right and his faith in god or customs.

TN Hindus Wake Up! by Eternal Truth on 06 Nov 2008

It is actually shame on Tamil hindus who take such crap from Karuna. Had he been standing in election from any other state, hindus would have voted him out. But unfortunately Tamil hindus don't seem to have that will or power.

Nut cases by Boyman on 06 Nov 2008

Brahmins who destroy India.. by Prakash on 06 Nov 2008

Well said karuna.. you have gutts but being a leader of the state learn some deplomacy to put up your issues.. there is no need to attack somebodys culture if its dosent cause injusties to others. wearing tilaks dosent affect others as much as untouchability does..support the low caste people and educate them at any cost, someday lets all good indians hope that there will be no caste system in india, and a so called untouchable will be prime minister of india. day will come a brahmin will be a tea boy or a house keeper to the dalit prime minister ... jai hind... jai bharath ... jai humanity .. jai equality.

Karuna means right... by Dharma on 05 Nov 2008

What Karuna is looking forward is there should be social equality. There is no upper class and lower class as such. He doesn't want to attack the so called 'high castes'.

CHEAP POLITISIAN by kumar on 05 Nov 2008

First ask your family members not to put tilak. Then teach your idea to your family relatives. now a days no one listen to your views. Everyone knew about you.Do you have the guts to say that those who are spoting tilak need not vote for DMK.?we don't know why media is considering him as a important person and publishing his views and wasteing time. Let us concentrate on things which is worth.

Karuna Read this with eyes wide open. Don't forget to remove your black glasses by InnAK on 05 Nov 2008

Karunanidi, You are for "equality of all", I hail that idealogy. You are aetheist. Again that is good for you. But being aetheist doesnot give you authority or right to be anti-Hindu. Why only targetting Hinduism? Why not other religions which also has some kind things to follow? (NOTE: I have respect for other religions. Here I don't mean to insult other religions, just for quote) Why you always find the fault with Hindus as if there are no faults in any other religions? Your time has neared as you can see you are old enough to retire from these stinky politics. Defaming, false allegations are a part of the political game in India, you are not exceptional to it. You know what, I say to you that whatever you said to Hindus follow it in your home first. Go, erase the tilak(kumkum) of your daughters. Seriously you should be true to your words. Hinduism never said that it is a must for every Hindu to sport tilak, ash or saffron; rather it is a belief. Actually you need a true heart.

Karunanidhi the joker by Praveen on 05 Nov 2008

All this just to remain a controversial figure, just to remain in lime-light. Tomorrow, someone may asks why Muslim wear round cap and keep beard or for that matter why Karunanidhi always appear wearing dark glasses. Better to ignore him.

karuna nidhi by sundar on 05 Nov 2008

karunanidhi should be booked. he never talks about muslims or christians and their habits and their equality. all hindus should leave him atleast now. let him say that he will not give party tickets to believers of God. let hims say he need no votes of believer of God. he will lose his deposit. even now he is at this stage. Hindus wake up. where are brahmins in tamil nadu. most are in america. only poor are there. he needs somebodys body to climb up. (like raj). he wants to divert attention from power cuts, srilankan issue etc.,

My Religions by K.V.Shriram on 05 Nov 2008

Dear People of India Please understand Hinduism has survived million's of attacks for the past several centuries. It’s the selection of the people that hardens each and every successful religion’s of this world till date and its practices and teachings. If a religion or its teaching were undesirable then it would not have survived so long. People come and go but religion and culture stays and grows forever and it survives greatly to fruit and seed and to grow, no one has been able to stop this cycle. Some pests have invaded our garden in this century also and they all are old and would have perished by the next winter. New pests will come but I know they are all weak and will also perish soon. Gone are those religions and its teaching that people don't accept and follow so don't worry. No one can shake my religions and the many languages that are the creations of a great god's and goddesses that we believe in and its existence. The people who don’t understand the greatness of the religion they were born in shall die as ignorant fools one day. Several religions are followed in this sub-continent and no one can deny that Hinduism is their mother religion that their fore-fathers did follow and very well understood Hinduism. Thanks.

ENLIGHTENED KARUNA'S COMMENT by M.Arun on 05 Nov 2008

By bashing the traditional customs of various Hindu groups including the Brahmins Karuna is breaching the human rights of the Hindus. To validate his comment against the customs and traditions of the Hindus Karuna must query the Muslims the purpose of the rituals of Christmas, Easter, circumcision andRamadan in India where all religions are equal. People like Karuna should contribute to bond permanent harmony among all the communities of the country to enable the country to move forward to tackle the mundane issues the common man is facing.

HINDU HATRED by Cdr GVK Unnithan on 05 Nov 2008

Hinduism is a way of life-if it is a religion it is highly tolerent- that is why such senail remarks are toerated. If it was about certain other school of thought, there would have been a fatwa, much to the dislike of every one. He who uttered would have regretted !

Karuna by Krishna on 05 Nov 2008

He is an opportunist and will go to any extent to hang around on power. It is quite often people when they certain age do forget their memory and keep on telling all sorts of unwanted things. Do we really need people who are blind and on wheel chair and not able to stand along without support from the vested people around them. The people of tamilnadu should come forward to throw this type memory less and blind people.
