Mumbai The 26/11 trial took a new turn on Tuesday with the prosecution stating that Pakistan Army was involved in the Mumbai terror attacks and a serving Major General had supervised their training in LeT camps across the border.

"The conspiracy of the 26/11 attack was hatched on Pakistan soil...It was a classic case of state-sponsored terrorism", Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said in his final arguments which began in a high-security court at Central Prison here.

Attired in white kurta and pyjama, 22-year-old Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving Pakistani gunman, was seen in the dock covering his face with a handkerchief most of the time. Two other accused, Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed, sat besides him on a bench.

Nikam said Kasab and the nine other slain terrorists had undergone military and intelligence training in Pakistan given by activists of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and supervised by certain officers of the Pakistan Army.

"Kasab in his confession has said one Major General was present during their training and supervised the firing practice. The name of this Major General was deliberately not revealed to the attackers as he occupies a senior position in the army," Nikam said.

The Major General had taken keen interest during the firing practice and even patted Kasab for his good shots at targets, he said.

Kasab, he said, was a well trained commando and had also been imparted intelligence training to mislead the court. He had taken U-turns a number of times by making confessions and later retracting them, Nikam said. Alleging that the LeT and the Army were hand-in glove, the prosecution said a deliberate attempt was made by the conspirators to conceal Pakistan's involvement in the attack.

"The attackers were given fake identity cards under fictitious Indian names to conceal their nationality so that Pakistan's name did not surface. Slain terrorist Imran Babbar had even contacted a TV news channel during the attacks and claimed that he was from Hyderabad," Nikam argued.

Nikam said top LeT leaders including Hafeez Sayeed and Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi were present at the Pakistan training camp.

The conspirators had directed the terrorists not to reveal their true identity and nationality to ensure that Pakistan's name does not crop up in the attack.

"Till date Pakistan has refused to take responsibility for the attacks and not yet claimed bodies of the nine slain terrorists," Nikam said. "Are they apprehending that relatives of the slain terrorists would reveal the secrets"? he asked.

Nikam said that Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) accounts were opened prior to the attacks through Callphonex, a service provider in New Jersey to use mobile phones and the payments were made by Mohammad Iqbal, a Pakistani national.

Summing up, Nikam said "When I was leading evidence I was looking at the larger picture to get to the root of the conspiracy and find out who were conspirators of this attack.

The terror of this nature would not have been possible without overt support of organised state actors".

It is kasab he will tell each time each stories because his very intention is to prolong the case as much as possible and later when the chance come want to escape. Kasab Trail by shadi katyal on 10 Mar 2010

Why are we mudying the case. We have no name of the officer who trained them so why waste the time and what will it prove. The world knows that Pakistan is the training ground of all terrorist so far caught around the world but India has failed to get any help as we continue to muddle through such news and trails. Granted you are correct but can you name the person or do you think Pakistan will handover the officer.l Grow up and stick to facts and go with them.

The Soft Indian State by Dr. Ranjana Bajpai on 09 Mar 2010

Could anyone please tell the government of India that these Taliban, JuD, Lashkar, IM amd Pakistani Security Forces are different names but one face of terror machinery targeted against India. Then why these investigations? The soft Indian state relishes the likes of Afzal Guru and Kasab. How many more attacks and what sort of damage is actually awaited till they are hanged? Is anyone listening there?

UNSC To Impose Appropriate Punishments On Pakistan by Bharat on 09 Mar 2010

It is now a clear case that pakistan has to handover to India, the maj. gen. of pak army involved, hafiz saied and all others as per India's list in addition to a justifiable financial compensation for the loss of property & lives on the Taj Hotel attack of 2008 November 26. Based on the disclosures of ajmal kassab, India can now firmly smear & attenuate pakistan as a terrorist nation by bringing it before ICJ at Hague for imposing appropriate punishments. UNSC has now every reason to expel pakis from the UN and isolate it in front of the int'l community, and that should be a lesson to states feeding terrorists.

Pakistan is a terrorist state and would tell any lie to fool the world. by Samir Vaidya on 09 Mar 2010

Pakistan is a terrorist state fighting a proxy war with india. They have been sucessful in Fooling NATO about sham war in baluchisthan and NWFP. They have been sucessful in getting all the aid on pretext of war on terror. Not a single important terrorist living now in pakistan is either captured or killed by pakistani army and those who got killed were by drones of US army. I am ashamed that not single taxpayer in US asks his senators that all the aid to pakistan is spent on training terrorists and fighting a sham war with no posetive results. they captured the cave where zawahari lived but how thousands of fighters escaped unnoticed.

THE PATHETIC STATE OF PAKISTANI GOVERNMENT! by Padmaja Parthasarathy on 09 Mar 2010

On one hand, Pakistan wants peaceful co-existence with India and on the other, they keep supporting terrorism. Are they not sensible enough to understand that violence and peace cannot be wedded to each other and they have to be sincere and honest if they really want to have the composite dialogue? It is in fact, a complicated issue for the so called leaders in Government because in reality they are not actually in power but the army is the one that is calling the shots and unfortunately the name-sake leaders could not admit it lest they would lose their positions as well as their lives! What a disgrace!

when will this end? by Salim on 09 Mar 2010

we have been hearing about this trail, expenses to the tax payers, support for the terrorists from SRK's good neighbour, involvement of the Good neighbours army etc for many months. Can this end and we hang Kasab and Afzal guru and the other two traitors before another flight gets hijacked by the good neighbours? The earlier the better or else Anthulay or Digvijay Singh may open their toilet mouth. Please hang them and give contract to Mossad to finish of the rest of them in their own country. If anyone else feels that Pakis are good neighbours they can very well settle in that world capital of terrorism and have a terrorful life. Our Friend Dawood with Minadad is waiting there for you guys. Shoot them all

Sad state of India's judicial system by RJ Khurana on 09 Mar 2010

What is the wrong with India' criminal justice system? Over two years have passed since Kasab along with 9 others waged war against the state of India. The group killed over 200 innocent persons. of the 10, he was the only one who was caught alive. It was a war that continued for 59 hours in full view of the cameras before the 9 attackers could be eliminated and one caught alive. Strange, even though the trial has run for two years no verdict has been announced on this lone attacker who was caught alive. Given the snail's pace at which India's judicial system works, there is little hope for this country.
