Hoshiarpur (Punjab), March 8: Kashmir Singh, who returned to India recently after spending 35 years in Pakistan jails, went back on his statement that he was a spy.

Singh told PTI on telephone that the media had distorted his statement made at a press conference in Chandigarh on his working for the Government in seventies.

At the Meet-the-Press programme in Chandigarh yesterday, he had admitted to having worked as a spy and also blamed Government agencies for not having looked after his family after his arrest in Pakistan.

But today he said his statement was distorted. Singh declined to give any details of his working for the Government.

"I did not give the statement of my being a spy," he said.

Answering a question he declined that he was retracting yesterday's statement under pressure. "There was no pressure on me to withdraw the statement," he added.

His childhood friend Gurmit Chand Bhardwaj, a former Joint Director of News in AIR, told PTI in Chandigarh that Singh maintains that he worked for the government.

Bhardwaj also said that Pakistan Human Rights Minister Ansar Burney, who had played a key role in the release of Singh, also rang up and talked to Singh today seeking clarifications on his spy statement.

Singh was stated to have worked for the army and for the Punjab Police as a constable.

Indian Prisoners languishing in the Pakistan Jails. by CV Ravindran. on 09 Mar 2008

There are several Indians languishing in the Pakistan and Chinese jails and they have been tortured. It is regretted to know that our Government of India and the concerened State Governments which belong to the native Indians no human sympathy and no courtesy has been shown for their release. It is a known fact that espionage is one of the methods employed all over the globe by all the Governments and our Government since Independence is no exception. It is a well known fact that our Central Government is interested only in the work and not their welfare.I earnestly appeal to the Human Right Groups to take up the capture, torture and immediate release of our citizens in Pakistan jails.I also request the Citizens of India to form a Group and take up the matter in the appropriate forums.Kashmir Singh's real experience at the hands of the Pakistan's various agencies is an eye opener for every Indian Citizen.Let the concerned Union Minister be he External Affairs,Defence,Home make useful contribution on this otherwise the affected family gets unfair treatment. This is nothing but torture by Hitler's men and Pakistan must not be spared int he International Forums.

Ethical Governance by SKannath on 09 Mar 2008

Being a spy is not a big deal, in todays world every thing could be used for spying. In an Orwellian system everything is monitored and is doctored for an ideology. In such a situation every one should reason whether they are doing right or wrong as they could be doing some one's dirty work. Make one's life ethical and do not compromise ask and reason why you are doing something for others. Say no to every compromising and unethical act no matter who ask to do. Do not be unofficial representatives for morons, corrupt, men slayers, religious bigots, paranoiac beliefs or any one as no one is to believed on face value. World is better place without all these.

Kashmir's Shifting Statements by Ashok Mehdiratta on 09 Mar 2008

Kashmir is talking out of turn and probably on some wrong advice.Spies donot talk.If he was a spy employing agency would have taken him in to custody for de-briefing.From his statements he looks very tough mentally.HE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN A SPY BUT A NORMAL SOURCE LIVING IN A BORDER VILLAGE.Incidentally Rs400 was the basic pay of an officer in early seventies. It implies that he was not a Sepoy. He could have only been an informer who was being paid some money when ever he brought some information.

THE PROBLEM WITH ALL SINGHS IS...THEY CANT... by rajababu on 09 Mar 2008

I AM SURE HE MEANT HE WAS sepoy, NOT eespy DONT BLAME HIM IT IS A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM AMONG PUNJBIS WHO CAN NOT PRONOUNCE CERTAIN ENGLISH WORDS, LIKE "SUPPORT" A PUNJABI PERSON EVEN MANMOHAN SINGH SAYS "SPORT"

Kashmir Singh by S.A.M on 12 Mar 2008

A Sepoy?? OMG this is outrageous, please, please dont make it look more uglier by these far fetched theories, please read his complete statement, either on TV or on the so many hundreds of newspapers. Your hypothesis considers the rest of the world 'stupid'. I think if you just leave it here, it will look less ugly.

Spy or Speoy by jati hoon on 08 Mar 2008

Please clarify, were you a spy or speoy. If you were a spy then you were working for India and if you were a speoy then you were working for India's Independence.Be of a independent mind, do not listen to press, they have a habbit of distorting words.

India releasing 25 prisoners for kashmir by Rajeev on 08 Mar 2008

Pakistan is taking too much credit for releasing kashmir. the actual deal is "APP quoted him as telling Express News that if Singh was a spy, he should have been hanged in 1978 when the president rejected his mercy petition He said India was set to release 25 Pakistani prisoners who would return to Pakistan within a month".This is from a pak newspaper web site.So 25 prisoners for one man.. that was the deal..

who is talking? Kashmir Singh or ibrahim? by KMR Overseas on 08 Mar 2008

He is damaging his own credibility by going to media at this early stage!!

A Friendly Advice to Shri Kashmir Singh by SLB on 08 Mar 2008

I think Shri Kashmir Singh should now observe silence for sometime and relax, and not create problems either for himself or for the country by making conflicting statements to the press. Jai Gurumaharaj ji ki Jai.

Kashmir singh by HMS on 09 Mar 2008

There is enormous pressure on Ansar Burney. Attempts have been made on his life too. Let him continue the noble cause and I hope India and pakistan releases each others prisoners and those that are no longer any threats to each other.

Ethical Governance by SKannath on 08 Mar 2008

Kashmir Singh should be stopped from speaking to media for security of Indian prisoners in Pakistan and also for Punjab and himself.
