Srinagar Activist Arundhati Roy, who created a controversy the other day by questioning Jammu and Kashmir's accession to the Union, today harped on the same thing saying that the state was never an integral part of India.

Roy was speaking at a seminar on the theme 'Wither Kashmir: Freedom or enslavement' organised by Coalition of Civil Societies (CCS).

"Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. It is an a historical fact. Even the Indian government has accepted this," the Booker Prize winner said.

Arundhati Roy alleged that India became a 'colonising power' soon after its independence from British rule.

She is not a sincere author at all !!!! by yogesh on 29 Oct 2010

vinayak , No one need courage in India to speak like this, its a fashion to get in limelight by giving such speeches. If she is wise enough , has she tried to go in depth of issue before giving such statement. Before we try to say anything let me tell you some east to recognize facts: - Although as per separatist and Pakistan , POK is not actually POK but a free Kashnire , if it true then why they didn't protested when China saya it as "Northern Pakistan". Why the hell our govt cant raise a voice in international stage for this or at least Kashmiri people at aleast. - Do you think Separatist alone can do justice with J&K state or even if we think from Kashmiri peoples perspective assuming they want separate state,is it finn to impose that decision to Ladakhi and Jammu people ??? Man they also belong to that state then why they can't think that India is ruling forcefully on them _ Last but the not least , where are the Kashmiri pundits , why forgot them. who she forget this fact.

Freedom from the people by NiK on 26 Oct 2010

People in India(read: Kashmir) need 'freedom' from a democratic government of the people. Genius!

One at a time by Ganesh Rao on 26 Oct 2010

I think the govt must shift all the Maosists to Kashmir and ask them to fight the jihadis and in return, must provide free land in Kashimir. As it is , their fight is for land.Whoever wins,it will be one less problem for india.

Kashmir was not part pf India by Indian on 26 Oct 2010

Arundhati has the constitutional freedom to voice her opinion on any matter. No doubt, Kashmir is predominantly Muslim and less Hindu, and it is a controvertial strip if land. Kashmir is a bone of contention between two countries... Arundhathi is right.

send her away by LR on 26 Oct 2010

Someone should give her a one way ticket to Pakistan or Bangladesh. Lets see how long she survives there as a female author !

Kudos to Arundhati. She has got courage to speak truth in the country of hypocrisy. I see lot of so called true Indians (who are far far away from civility) are false crying over their limited knowledge they have learned from controlled education. I support her.

Finally the truth by Sandeep Vaidya on 25 Oct 2010

Arundhati Roy must be congratulated for showing the courage to speak the truth. A rare commodity today

Arundhati has a perspective, please appreciate viewpoints by Hersh on 25 Oct 2010

Arundhati's assertion may have some ground in history beyond a straight denial out of nationalistic emotionalism.

Democratic India and Arundhati Roy by R Prasad on 25 Oct 2010

Fortunately India mature democratic country, encircled by highly militarised enemy states, with space for all multifarious critics strengthening the resolve of the people to embrace democracy as their chosen system of government to strengthen the stability of the country and their freedom and security.

Brilliant idea by Alvin on 25 Oct 2010

Cheap publicity stunt. If she says ''Kashmir is integral part of India",then no media attention and nobody notice her. What a brilliant lady idea ?

not a cheap stunt by Poorna Chander Reddy on 26 Oct 2010

If you had read her books you wouldnt think it as a stunt, she has opposed government in lot of issues and she writes every thing with proper references instead of pushing ideas into people's mind. She writes with proofs and documents.

Activist Arundhati Roy by Rajesh on 25 Oct 2010

UPA government will sit mum on such things and fulfill the wish of China to divide indian in different parts. Anti national speach, activities, provocation should face stricter law and that too immediate. Democracy means freedom, when more freedom, the law should be more and more stricter to control the population from wrong doing.

Kashmir by KK on 25 Oct 2010

This is the real leftist stand - pure-left views - what about Arunachal ? Give it to China? And PoK ?? That Arundhati also wants to be in lime light and manages to do so, no matter how. The support and patronage she receives from so called and respected pro left intellectuals of our society is disheartening and pathetic - how can the society call these people Intellectuals ? What has she done for the society other than rising the bogey of Human Rights Violations and disturbing the pace of development ? Remember Narmada Andolan ? She would be prosecuted and punished in any other self respecting nation. Many of her political stands defy the spirit of India State and obstruct developmental progress because of the freedom she enjoys in a Democratic framework.. Like many other Politicians and Criminals she has taken full disadvantage of our poor Judiciary's prosecution record. These people do not utter a word against China or Chinese projects, rather work in tandem with Chinese policies.

Booker Prize and Nobel Prize by Kevin Joseph on 25 Oct 2010

After Booker Prize ,she is now aiming nobel prize. She got booker prize by novel criticizing communist movement.

History - a paradox by An Indian on 25 Oct 2010

JAMMU AND KASHMIR was part of Maharaja Ranjit SIngh in 1819. He fought and won it from the Mughals. Punjab was and is an integral part of India. If J&K was ruled by Mughals as part of HINDUSTAN, won-over by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and annexed by the British in 1854, hence J&K is an integral part of Hindustan / India.

JK as Integral part of India by Indian at heart on 25 Oct 2010

Ms Arundhati is not realizing the pain she is inflicting on people of India through her statements like these. First she should study the history of accession of JK to India and then give statements.

Mr. by Jai Singh on 25 Oct 2010

IS ARUNDHATI ROY A PART OF INDIA? FREEDOM OF SPEECH DOES NOT GIVE HER THE RIGHT TO ABUSE OR HURT THE FEELINGS OF OVER A BILLION PEOPLE. NOR DOES DEMOCRACY GIVE HER THE RIGHT TO AXE THE BRANCH OF THE VERY TREE WHICH HAS NURTURED AND SUSTAINED HER. SHE SHOULD KEEP HER ARROGANCE WITHIN BOUNDS.

arundhati ??// by lin on 25 Oct 2010

very very dissapointment as an indian.such a great lady but trying very hard to get a noble prize like the chinese one by playing very cheap game. Arundhatiji Please we respect you very much but donot protect your profession by selling this nation of ours .

congress thy name is cowards by raju on 25 Oct 2010

The country is ruled by cowards allowing all these nonsense. The Upa led by congress should be suied for treason for allowing this meet first in Delhi and later in srinagar and then looking the other way all in the name of freedom. This mute response has emboldened these people to come together. Look at the audacity of these naxals coming on common platform and openely defying the govt. It is probably the worst govt. Even the so called interlocutors are paid agents and make irresponsible statements. We have more enemies within

kashmir by Bharath on 25 Oct 2010

Arundathi Roy makes fun of Indian democracy during her foreign sojourns, is considered a celebrity by the government and the media. She, along with so called intellectuals and separatists, was campaigning for 'azadi' for Kashmiris, but not a word about the 4 lakh Kashmiri Hindus driven out from Kashmir. In any other country, they would have been put behind bars. UPA unwilling to act against separatists, terrorists and anti-nationals, and is pampering them. Under the UPA Government, terrorism has grown as also communal hatred and divide.

Which India ?? by chanakya on 25 Oct 2010

For sure she is mentally challenged but still I want to know which India she is talking of ? Is it prior to partition or prior to foreign invasions ? When India became Independant several small states had to be integrated including Goa. India as it existed before invasions included several parts of which Kashmir is also one. Just by toeing the line of seperatists, she wants to become famous at the cost of National interests. Democracy doesn't mean one can indulge in senseless propaganda. This should be curbed at all levels and at all costs.

arunthati on Kashmir by K.sugavanam on 25 Oct 2010

Shameless people like her will tell there was no nation called India and it was forcibly created. The worthless prizes were given to them only to defame an emerging super power of INDIA.She should be booked under sedition and put in the proper place meant forsuch traitors. She is voicing her mastres'voices.

Mr, by Aravind on 25 Oct 2010

Is Ms. Roy Bengali or Malayali or Indian? Going by the way she thinks, again it has to be fragmented i.e State of Travancore or the the earstwhile princely part of Bengal where she grew up or currently live! Rather than thinking the way Germany was united as one country, Ms. Roy still can think in divisive terms only. Probably she is craving for media attention, hence chose to comment this way.
