New Delhi, January 4 Prime accused in the Nitish Katara murder case, Vikas Yadav, today sought a gag order against key prosecution witness Ajay Katara, claiming his statements to media were affecting the trial.

As soon as the final arguments in the case resumed today, defence counsel G K Bharti moved an application before Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur contending that Ajay was trying to frame Vikas and his cousin Vishal Yadav, by giving misleading statements to media.

“The witness (Katara) is trying to lower the image of the accused (Yadav) by making false statements to the press,” the application read.

Ajay’s allegations against Vikas’ father and controversial UP politician D P Yadav were also prejudicial to the proceedings, the counsel alleged.

Taking exception to Ajay visiting the special public prosecutor B S Joon’s official chamber every now and then, Bharti requested the court to ask him and also the victim’s mother Neelam Katara not to give any interviews to the media. The court issued notices to Ajay and the prosecution, seeking replies from them.

Meanwhile, the defence alleged that the chargesheet in the case was filed after an inordinate delay and there were attempts to influence the investigation with the aim of framing the accused. The court has posted the matter for January 8.
