Communal Harmony

Malappuram (Ker), November 10: In an enduring example of communal harmony, a Bhagavati temple near Malappuram still follows the tradition of its priest seeking the blessings of the head of a Muslim family before performing the rituals.

After an interlude of 54 years, the ceremony was performed at Sobhaparambu Sree Kurumba temple at Tanur near Malappuram recently when 40-year-old Rajeev took over as the master priest following the death of his father Appu.

Clad in a scarlet cloth with forehead smeared with sandal paste and 'sindoor', Rajeev stood with folded hands before a lighted brass lamp in front of the temple to seek the blessings of Bappu Hajee of Pazhayakath family.

As the auspicious moment came, Hajee declared Rajeev to be the master priest. The temple's 'tantri' (traditional high priest) Aniyan Nambbodirippad and patrons of the shrine were also present.

According to Hajee, the right of anointing the priest of the temple was conferred on his family by the erstwhile ruler of Vettathnadu principality some eight centuries ago.

When Rajeev's father Appu took over as the priest, he was blessed by Bappu Hajee's father Koyakutty Marakkar.

The senior member of the Hindu family traditionally authorised to conduct the rituals of the shrine, would come and seek the blessings of the head of Pazhayakath family before commencement of the festivals of the shrine.

"No one in my community has voiced resentment over the custom", said Hajee, who is also an office-bearer of the Mosque committee in the locality.

Ignorance is not bliss by Jayadevan on 15 Nov 2008

Please try to learn a bit about local traditions and beliefs before displaying your ignorance. Vavar was the right hand man of Sabarimala Shri Dharma Shastha in his mortal life as Ayyappa. You wouldn't know about Tipu Sultan having darshan of the Bhagavati at Kollam Vishaharikkavu near and endowing lands on the temple. You wouldn't have heard the names of Sheik Chinna Moula, Bismillah Khan and Yesudas or the temples where they perform(ed) with devotion. Or the cross-influences between the Bhakti movement and Sufism. No, you would know only that the Kaaba and the Taj Mahal are Siva temples. And Gahzni looting Somnath 21 times. This from an inhabitant of a country from where the Chinese emperor asked for a gift of scholars in preference to all the material riches India could offer! You people with the saffron glasses talk about our glorious traditions. Learn a bit about them. Then you might find yourself using the brains god gave you. Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, asato ma sat gamaya.

SANATAN DHARMA AND ISLAM by aqmamin on 11 Nov 2008

a good example of Sanatan Dharma and Islam in alliance as it had been for centuries until Saffaronite politicians and fanatics appeared on the political scene with the intention of grabbing power, but they do not mind destroying the goodwill and co-existence

Dhimmis by T. Jayaprakash on 11 Nov 2008

There is also a vavar mosque for pilgrims to pray near Sabarimala.Sri kurumba temple is the second case that I have heard. In both cases Hindus are made to prostrate before their task masters. Could anyone show one instance of a Muslim seeking the blessings of a Hindu.?I just want to make sure that these practices have not originated form the Dhimmitude of the Hindus since time immemorial.
