Chandigarh, March 11 Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira and cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia, both first-time MLAs, crossed swords on the floor of the House after the former objected to the Chief Minister being referred to as a "saint" in the Governor's speech on Day One of the Budget session.

The two engaged in a verbal duel, which invited criticism from treasury bench MLAs, even as majority of the opposition preferred not to join the heated arguments.

As the Information and Public Relations Minister stood up to interrupt the Congress MLA's attack on the CM, Khaira reminded Majithia that he did not know know who Bholath MLA . "It's an insult to the voters who elected me from my constituency," Khaira said.

He asked the CM to introduce him to Majithia, so that next time he remembers his name. Majithia, unwilling to take it lying down, retorted, "Is pyo de puttar nu koi hor kam nai." Amid strong objection from the treasury benches, who were on their feet as the CM sat patiently, Khaira said, "The CM is not a saint. Have you ever heard of a saint against whom charges have been framed in a corruption case? Can the CM, who has 50-year political experience, cite even one achievement. Capt Amarinder Singh clinched the water deal..." All this went on as SAD president Sukhbir Badal, who was formally welcomed by the Speaker, sat inside the visitors' gallery. Khaira said, "The Governor is a decorated soldier. It's improper to make him say all that." Majithia interrupted Khaira by saying, "Are you doubting the integrity of the Governor. He could have chosen to delete what he felt was not to be said."

Capt Amarinder Singh and leader of the opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal were not present during the session today.
