Kathmandu, February 14: Nepalese police have claimed that the alleged kidney transplant racket kingpin Amit Kumar had secret Valentines who used to send him SMSes professing their love and support while he was on the run.

The love messages sent to Kumar, who was deported to India last week after his arrest from a jungle resort in southern Nepal, were by women other than his wife, according to a police officer.

Police sources said that the tainted doctor appeared to have romantic relations with more than one woman.

One of the SMSes to Kumar recorded in the police file says: "Jaan, take care I'm with u, don't worry. OK. I love u very much." The sender's name began with the letter ‘A’, who had used a Canadian SIM card, The Himalayan Times reported.

Another message sender asked him not to worry. The message read: "Never hesitate in taking risks and working hard b'coz you have to dive deep into the sea to find the pearls," adding 'Hav a gr8 day. Love."

These messages were sent from two different SIM cards, according to police, who believed that none of the SMSes were sent by Kumar's wife, who is also based in Canada.

Police came to known about the SMSes while interrogating Kumar at the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police's Crime Division after his arrest.

The alleged kidney don also frequently visited casinos, dance bars and night clubs during his brief visits to Nepal, police said.

International criminal Charles Sobhraj was also arrested from the Casino Royale in August 2003, following which he was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing an American woman in Kathmandu in 1975.

How cheap by Dinesh on 15 Feb 2008

While it is important to provide more information about this "Kidney-racket con-doctor", this piece of news I believe, is a cheap journalism. I cannot understand how a truly-respected news-website like Indian Express can stoop down to displaying the SMSes sent/received by some third party, even though it was sent/received by a criminal. If it really contained some "earth-shattering news of great national importance, I do understand beaming it". Whether the criminal in question has one of 100 girl-friends, it is his personal matter and more related to him and his wife. I would look for good coverage of how this person duped innocent people of their organs and try to trace the number of people he has duped, maybe consolidate all of them into a forum and try to get some compensation for their sufferings, even though it is too late, rather than printing "gossip-SMSes" of a tainted criminal. Please concentrate on getting back to your "Bofors scandal exposure" kinda journalism.
