Forty-year-old Kumar, deported from Nepal yesterday, was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain at his residence here amidst tight security even as the media was waiting in the courts.
A K Singh, counsel appearing for the CBI, submitted that custodial interrogation of Kumar was required to unravel the "national and international" ramifications of the infamous racket, CBI sources said.
Seeking custodial interrogation of Kumar, who was arrested from a forest resort in Nepal following a red corner notice issued by Interpol, the sources said that CBI wanted to confront the accused doctor with an alleged victim Shakeel, whose kidney was removed without his consent.
Kumar's interrogation was necessary for unearthing his nexus with a few other accomplices, including some kidney transplant surgeons who clandestinely helped him in running the racket, the sources said.
A bank account, allegedly being operated by Kumar, contained over Rs one crore and his interrogation was necessary to ascertain his sources of income, the agency told the CMM, according to the sources.
The CBI informed the court that it wanted to know from Kumar, who had allegedly carried out over 500 illegal kidney transplants, as to who were the donors and recipients in the massive racket.

RatingKidney transplants are needed because of dire necessity, and there are no awareness for organ donation to make them available on a more widespread basis. Nepal is only such country in region where this racket is unearthed. Think of many gulf countries where surgeons and 'poor' or 'pooly informed' donors travel much more frequently for renal transplants. Hanging will not solve this perpetual problem. Rather our supreme court should direct our sleepy government and physician health minister to form a viable policy in this regard, so that organs could be made available legally within India itself, a log maintained of all such operations, and random sample checks performed periodically.
There should not be any court proceeding and no mercy to this Hindu doctor who stole the 500 kidneys from the poor patients. He should be hanged infront of SC with out delay and government should confisicate his property and bank accounts and distribute the money to the victims. I never understand why the BJP is silent on this issue?
To Syed Zainulabedin,My blood boils as much as yours when I read about this. Sure the culprits must be hanged. But two points1. The religion as you mention 'hindu' is not important and irrelevant information in your post.2. To 'No court proceedings...hang a person in front of SC' : This is not Saudi Arabia.
agreeing with the opinion that the strictest action should be taken against the errant doctor , i do not understand the need to drag hinduism and the BJP into this whole episode by MR. Syed. It is the mentality of such people that spread communalism. This is a crime committed by an individual and not a community. it is not only the responsibility of the BJP but the entire mankind to register their protest against such issues.
