Mumbai, February 1 While it is now clear that the underworld had shown a keen interest in the operations of wanted kidney kingpin Dr Santosh Raut, the hotel that received the extortion demand letter by post— Hotel Liberty, owned by Raut and left for his son following his divorce settlement with his first wife — has also, curiously, figured at the heart of two corruption cases against policemen.

Hotel Liberty, with three star accomodations, is located on the Golibar Road in Santacruz (East). It is managed by Ravi Pandey, a close family friend of Raut’s first wife Sunita and her son. Twice, Pandey was asked for bribes by policemen.

On January 25 last year, Police Sub Inspector Santosh Kotwal was arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from Pandey to stop harassing customers. Kotwal was posted as the reader (assistant) of then Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VIII) Shashikant Shinde. Within 72 hours of the arrest, Shinde was shunted to the Local Arms division of the police.

The same month, Senior Police Inspector Kisan V Agarkar of the Social Service Branch was suspended after he was found guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from Pandey, after he had threatened to implicate and book Pandey in a flesh trade case.

“Yes, on both occasions after the harassment became too much to bear, I approached the authorities concerned and lodged complaints. In the first case I paid Rs 10,000 and in the second Rs 30,000. Action was taken against both policemen on my complaints,” said Pandey.
